It’s clear Salvador Ramos was mentally sick, so why wasn’t he stopped?

The suspect in the Uvalde shooting displayed signs of serious mental illness, but we are incapacitated by political correctness and leftist immorality.

As details emerge about the massacre at Robb Elementary School, we are learning that the suspected shooter, Salvador Ramos, showed obvious signs of severe mental illness and instability.

In a photo circulating across social media, Ramos stands in front of a mirror posing for a selfie. His demeanor is feminine and hypersexual – pouty lips and a shirt provocatively exposing his bare chest. Although this sort of behavior should be an obvious red flag, in a world of political correctness and leftist immorality, so few bat an eye, and innocent lives are irreparably shattered.

As is most often the case with shooting rampages, the suspects are known to authorities, and the alarm was sounded – Salvador Ramos was no different.

Texas school shooter Salvador Ramos once cut up his face with knives ‘just for fun,’ friends say https://t.co/Mw4IsctCAX pic.twitter.com/YvmHGsENMz

— New York Post (@nypost) May 25, 2022 According to Santos Valdez Jr., a former friend, Ramos had previously cut his face up with a knife “just for fun” and was known to shoot at random people with BB guns. Other classmates recalled he ‘cut himself’ saying, “I like how it looks.” Nadia Reyes, a high school acquaintance, said Ramos posted videos to social media documenting domestic fights with his mother as law enforcement was present.

With all these very clear and glaring warning signs, why wasn’t this tragedy prevented? After all, the FBI budget request for 2023 is nearly $11 billion, and if they have time and generous amounts of taxpayer dollars to expend on investigating a garage pull, they should be able to identify real threats.

I think it’s easy to have a knee-jerk reaction and support the red-flagging of people who are “mentally ill and dangerous”. But I see two problems with this:

1) As a middle-aged white heterosexual Christian male who voted for Trump and with a stable job and family life, I’m pretty sure I could be flagged as “mentally ill and dangerous” by my neighbors here in MA.

2) Most (by a long shot) professionals in the field of psychology seem to be very woke and very crazy. I think those people (working in schools, in social services, in corporate HR, and in private practice) seem to be manufacturing mental illness by normalizing all sorts of deviance. Funneling “at-risk” people to the professionals seems likely to make things worse.

I support mental hospitals for people who have done bad things and I support ending any and all “gun free zones” so that good citizens can protect themselves and the people around them.

These guys have it backwards. Mental Health “treatment” comes BEFORE acts of insane violence. Maybe eventually someone in charge will get a clue but I doubt it.

Mental illness is being practiced by Democrat politicians today.

I wonder how much his Hispanic ethnicity played into him not being on anyone's radar screen. Remember the Broward County school shooter was labeled a Hispanic eventhough his actual ethnicity was Slavic. He was adopted and that adopted surname was Hispanic. In that county there was a desire to reduce the number of “problem children” of non-white ethnicity reported up to federal & state programs so he and I am sure others were left out of the numbers. Samething might have happened in this incident.

The problem is one of balance.

Sure in retrospect, Salvador was mentally ill. He must have been because he went on to mass murder.

But is there really a definable set of behaviors prior to a mass shooting, where we can say someone needs professional help?

At what point should we refer people to authorities for evaluation? Things the article points out about Salvador...

Is self mutilation illegal? If not illegal, isn’t it a sign that someone is a threat to others and/or themselves. I believe once someone is a threat to themselves or others it is a legal reason to lock them up for 72 hours, even, in idiotic cauliflowernia it is. 5150 is the code number.
If the people’s government would enforce the law, lots of people would have a 72 hour pass to get the right meds and certainly be on the radar.

"People are free to be strange, unfortunately, and you can’t have a monitor on everyone."

Here in Democrat-controlled New York State, both Cuomo's closed psych centers, and dumped mentally ill residents onto the street. It started when Mario Cuomo took office in 1983, and continued again during his son's terms as Governor. Eventually, those same residents tossed into the streets, ended up in the State's prison system. Nothing has changed in that system since I retired from it in 2003. People who are still working there, tell me it's even worse.

During Covid, Andrew Cuomo emptied convicts from the prisons, and they weren't required to complete their court-ordered sentences. This spring, a decision made under Cuomo/Hochul saw 5 State prisons closed, and convicts had to be dumped onto the street from around the State, to make room to shuffle the rest of the population around. Democrats say they want to lower crime, but in reality, everything they do, or fail to do, only increases crime. New York State has had a 3 Strikes Law since the early 1980's, yet no D.A. or State Attorney General has bothered to pursue prosecutions under it. It's nothing but sheer laziness on their part. That's why there are criminals with 19 prior arrests, many of them for violent offenses, back out on the street without bail within hours of their arrests. It's sickening. They have the means to stop this crap, but they won't do it. Instead, they tell you that crime is down. It's only down, because they are reducing the charges, cutting plea deals, and they're not locking up the criminals any more. Nobody these days does the time for the actual crime they commit.

Good points. Maybe we should outlaw murder. Oh, wait.

"Many teenagers are mentally ill. Most recover."

How many more mentally ill teenagers that will never recover, have been produced during the 2 year Covid lockdown? It's anybody's guess.

“People are free to be strange, unfortunately, and you can’t have a monitor on everyone.”

Right after I moved into town a man called up 911 told them he was cutting his leg off with a chainsaw and he wanted an ambulance. He’d tied it off, doused it in alcohol and used a new chainsaw. He cranked it while he was still on the phone and sawed his leg off. He was no stranger to the police. They’d had to deal with many, many bizarre and weird events with this man. When asked why they hadn’t done anything the sheriff answered, if we Baker Act him, we pay for it. It’s not in the budget and the mental hospital can charge anything they like.

Here’s a news snippet from Tampa several years ago.

“The arrest came in the same Clair-Mel City neighborhood east of Tampa where in July 1983 John William “Billy” Ferry Jr. splashed gasoline through a Winn-Dixie store and lit it, killing five and injuring 16. Ferry, 38, is serving a mandatory 125-year sentence at the Florida State Prison near Starke.”

This man’s family had begged the police to Baker Act him. Any officer can send just about anyone into a mental hospital for two weeks. It’s almost never done. Why? Expense. According to articles written at the time, even five minutes talking to him would have told the listener that he was a very dangerous man. Still, nothing was done until he’d murdered and maimed.

Any time you get a doctor, or a hospital involved it’s like going to the emergency room. They can charge anything they like.

When every other crime is committed law enforcement efforts focus on capture, trial and control of the responsible individual. When a shooting death is committed the Left is only interested in capture and control of guns (any guns) and go to great lengths to avoid punishing the perpetrator. It’s just guns, not knives, not clubs, not hammers — just guns. What happens when a person is killed by a drunk driver? The driver is apprehended and, more likely than not, incarcerated. Are the cars of everyone else banned or seized? Are the cars of law abiding citizens confiscated?

If they weren’t wasting time going after parents who speak up at school board meetings, they would have more time to deal with real threats.

If we were to screen all children — or, indeed, all people — for mental stability, there arises a set of problems.

Who does the screening? To what set of “values” are they responsible? Who selects the screeners? Is there to be any appeal from a negative report? Is mental re-calibration or re-education to be mandatory?

Can such an intervention process be squared with Liberty and the Constitution?

It gets thorny and dangerous quickly...

You’re right....to a point. But I, old doubting Thomas, think it’s worse than that. I believe that all our law enforcement agancies are corrupt; at least at the top. I believe they KNOW who every nut case around the country is. I believe the keep in touch with many of them, with under-cover agents who interact with them, test their emotions, even make suggestions to them and evaluate how close they think each one is to going postal. I believe Ramos showed signs that he was ready to blow, and an agent egged him on; even suggested that the elementary school would be an easy target. And WHY would they do this. Because they hate regular folks being able to defend themselves. They MUST create an atmosphere where privately owned firearms cannot be permitted and MUST be confiscated. JMHO.

There is no mental health care in this country. The families are left to deal with the mentally ill on their own. At their own risk. Parents of the mentally ill are blamed, threatened, terrified, helpless, and our lives are ruined. We ask social workers, judges, police, crisis counselors for help. We get 96 hour holds, and no answers. Dangerous young men in this country terrorize, threaten and kill and there are no answers. Gun control is not the answer. Better mental health attention is the answer. Every one of the young men who have committed these crimes is a mentally ill male misfit.
