I don’t knw what the issue was really...Greedo was holding a gun and basically threatening to kill Han. Solo got to his gun under the table and it was all she wrote after that. I would never vote to convict Han.

California and liberal antigun people fueled that debate!

Must have been around 1979. Girlfriend wanted to see Kramer vs. Kramer. I wanted to see Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Being a selfish young teen not yet versed in the ways of courting, I won the argument. Within an hour of the opening scene I was asleep and missed most of the movie. Most boring movie ever. We saw Kramer v Kramer the next day.

Yes, they’ve already shown the Godfather this year in the movie theaters. Its 50th anniversary was in March and was shown the entire month, I believe. it was in the top 10 several of those weeks. I first saw the Godfather during its 25th anniversary run in the theaters.

Greedo was holding a gun and basically threatening to kill Han.

Correct. Never wait for the person pointing a gun at you to fire first.

I remember seeing Star Wars as a kid in the theater. I and the entire audience gasped out loud the first time they traveled at hyper speed.

Even as a 7-year-old I thought the best part of the movie was the music. John Williams is Hollywood gold.

I remember going to see that movie when it came out. I was blown away. Had never seen anything like it before.

I was a college student that year. I had no plans to see the movie. Sci-fi wasn't really "in" at that time, and it just sounded dumb. One day as I was looking in the newspaper for a movie to see, I saw the Star Wars ad plastered with critic blurbs like "the year's best movie". I decided to go to the Galleria (in Houston) to see it. I could not believe the line snaking through the Galleria. I got in line and eventually got to see it. Loved it. I was a fan of classic movies, and it was filled with tropes from all sorts of classic adventure films and serials. Saw it several times that summer. The thing that made it great IMO was not that it was "new", but that it was old fashioned fun.

Re: Vangelis

Within the last week, someone at FR posted a music video of Vangelis playing Chariots of Fire on the piano in front of a large screen synchronized with the opening scene in the movie.

That was actually the method used to lay down music tracks on a film in 1981, but the video was well produced for that era, so it was probably Vangelis doing a reenactment.

The video starts out with Vangelis smoking a cigarette, and his burning cigarette in an ashtray clouds the picture for the entire video!

I tried to find the link on You Tube, but no luck.

I saw it on the Friday it opened. It was definitely astounding at that time. Probably saw it another 8 or 9 times over the next year and a half. That is another thing younger folks are surprised by. Star Wars played in our small town theatre for almost 2 years.

I remember going to see “Alien” with my best friend at the time.
“Hmm, looks like its rated R”
“So what are they going to do....show naked Aliens?”
It took us years before we could see it again it was that scary.

I was 10 years old when it came out... dogfight sequence was mind blowing with the X wings and Tie fighters. Saw it on summer vacation at the Midway theater in Rehoboth Beach DE with another family that we used to vacation with. They had a son a year younger than me, pretty hyper kid. At the height of the Death Star sequence when Luke is flying down the trench with Vader in hot pursuit we are all watching with our jaws hanging to the floor, the kid yells out “Go Luke go!” as loud as he can. One of the great memories of my youth.

What does “Han shot first” mean?

Refers to the circumstances under which Han shot the green bounty hunter dude in the cantina in Star Wars (New Hope). In the original release of the film, and it is said in the original novel as well, Han shot the green dude without the green dude shooting at Han at all. Afterwards, Lucas, edited the scene to make Han's shot one of self-defense.

The Ridglea had a 70mm projector and a HUGE screen. I believe ALIEN was shot in 35mm but it looked amazing on that screen. As slick as PROMETHEUS and ALIEN: COVENANT look today, they come off to me as absolutely idiotic re: ALIEN.

The original Nostromo crew seemed real and earthy, but I don’t think you could find a bigger batch of chuckleheaded explorers than Ridley did for his last two attempts. It’s as if he watched ALIEN: RESURRECTION and said “Now THAT crew of misfits is my dream cast…minus Sigourney”.

Now I remember, thank you. True, back in the 1977 version, Han did shoot first.
