Breastfeeding duration is associated with improved cognitive scores at ages 5 through 14, even after controlling for socioeconomic position and maternal cognitive ability, according to a new study.
Previous studies have found an association between breastfeeding and standardized intelligence test scores; however, a causal relationship is still debated. Improved cognitive outcomes could potentially be explained by other characteristics—such as socioeconomics and maternal intelligence—of the women who breastfeed their babies.
The unadjusted associations found that longer breastfeeding durations were associated with higher verbal and spatial cognitive scores at all ages up to ages 14 and 11, respectively. After taking the differences in socioeconomic position and maternal cognitive ability into account, children breastfed for longer scored higher in cognitive measures up to age 14, in comparison to children who were not breastfed. Longer breastfeeding durations were associated with mean cognitive scores 0.08 to 0.26 standard deviations higher than the mean cognitive score of those who never breastfed. This difference may seem small for an individual child but could be important at the population level.
The authors conclude that a modest association between breastfeeding duration and cognitive scores persists after adjusting for socioeconomics and maternal intelligence.

So glad my wife breast fed all 3 girls. And all 3 of them breastfed all 7 grandkids.
I stopped breastfeeding before age 14. Would it have helped to keep going?
Hard to breastfeed and be in the workforce. Not sure how practical this is.
Major corporations have provided private spaces and time for “pumping” for lactating mothers. Probably not at McDonalds though.
I did not produce sufficient quantities of milk to breastfeed my oldest.
Pumped like a cow for my preemie middle child.
My youngest latched, but again, not enough milk. Pumped for 6 weeks.
What I did do was lots of skin contact, humming, singing, talking to them, and cuddling, and affection. All my kids are top level students.
Breastfeeding is best, but if you can’t, then physical interaction is best.
Mankind cannot replace God.
Breastfeeding is.
It didn’t do much for me.
They were able to get your colostrum. That stuff is liquid gold!
Who woulda thunk nature was best?
Formula fed baby. Coulda been a genius..
People really have no idea just how good breastfeeding is for babies.
It goes beyond simply the superiority of breast milk nutritionally. It contributes to better blood circulation to the head and brain and better muscle development in the head and jaw of the baby.
It also is protective against disease and helps the digestive system thwart food allergy issues due to gut closure by the colostrum the first few days of nursing.
Mom benefits as well, and breast feeding is extremely protective against breast cancer and that has been known for a long time.
My wife was one of those moms that wouldn’t give up breast feeding our son. She was VP of HR for a well-known auto manufacturer in Europe at the time and would take pump breaks often plus fed in person when she got home.
(As Expats, we considered it bad form to take the generous maternity leave that was offered.)
The kid was well nourished for 18 months or so.
But I have always attributed my son’s smarts to the fact that we hooked up a set of headphones to Walkman and played Mozart, Oscar Peterson, Ella Fitzgerald, Gene Harris and other classic music thru her stomach as often as we could.
She says that she could feel that he really enjoyed it!
He just made Dean’s List again at a Top 30 college, so I guess something worked out in his favor!
Juicy! What an sad, little ass.
What? According to leftist perverts breasts are just for porn and sex.
I pumped breastmilk in the workforce 20 years ago (I gave birth to 4 babies from 1996-2005) and it was easy. Nowadays the pumps are better and the workforces are better. A 10 minute break every 3 hours is all that’s needed really. No big deal.
Yes, breastmilk is a superior product (and free!) and amazingly protective against breast cancer. That’s what breasts are made for and apparently the cancer cells respect that somehow. . .
I breastfed all 3 of my babies for the first year. I worked at a hospital when I had my second child. I pumped in an empty room during my lunch break using the Medela breast pump that I rented myself and took to work every day. This was in 1985 when breastfeeding was still subtly discouraged. If there’s a will, there’s a way.
If he’s really smart, he will graduated having resisted the leftist crap they will try to indoctrinate in him.
