If you were in the Eight Air Force and bombing Germany you really were flying into hell.

Some friends who lived for a time in a mobile home had a neighbor (pretty odd guy) who used to play big band era 78s at high volume when he had to drown out the old bombing run soundtrack that would occasionally take over his head (according to him). Apparently he too beat the odds.

My uncle flew B-17s for the Eighth Air Force during WWII. He was shot down and killed by flak in April 1944. His body lies in the American Cemetary in Normandy. He was 22.

WWII bomber crews had a higher casualty rate than did the infantry. That fact surprised me when I first ran across it.

The German FLAK was a very effective and dangerous gun for bomber crews.

The uncle I never knew (my mom’s only brother) was a tail gunner on a B24. On his first mission he went with it over Germany. He was 20.
