Retail sector is telling us things are getting ugly

Traders have been dumping retail stocks as quickly as each company opens its books and reveals that consumers just aren’t buying their stuff.

Last week, heavyweights Walmart and Target reported lower-than-expected results and got hammered for acknowledging that high inflation isn’t doing them any favors.

Target saw a quarter of its market value disappear in a single day last week after spooking financial markets with its downbeat assessment of coming months.

Another problem: Inventories are piling up because retailers have too much unsold merch on hand. This almost certainly will lead to discounts, which will cut deeper into profits.

Retailers are nothing if not cyclical.

But for the moment, what the retail world is telling us is that things probably will get worse before they get better. And they’re probably right.

They want it both ways... they want us dead, but they still want us to buy their stuff.

I’ve decided to go back to buying from stores instead of the internet. It’s a much better experience and you actually end up with what you really need.

If no one is buying, then you would expect prices to go down, or at least stabilize.

Maybe big sales are coming soon?

The Retailers can’t decide on storing the extra inventory and paying for warehouse space or marking down the extra stuff and taking a loss.

There is still inventory in China that was supposed be here for Christmas. A lot of the inventory is winter clothes and holiday items. It is a real mess.

The stores don’t have the brands and the parts that I need.

Yeah, I got a lotta 90s and 00s computer hardware to pass on.

When used with contemporary s/w, it all works great!

That's my take as well...retailers thought they could just pass along their increased costs and consumers said no dice. Next step from big retailers should be lower prices and the closing of locations that aren't generating profits.

They should reopen their stores.

I ordered clothing items this week from a catalogue and even got free shipping. Why go to a big box store when I can order quality items online?

Got the bras she needed from khols online. Free shipping.

Walmart inventory is just weird these days.

They have huge overstocks on some items and are out of stock on many other items—no rhyme or reason.

That'll increase unemployment. It had to happen. As long as the government stops printing so much money, we'll eventually get inflation under control. But we may go through a recession.

If they wanted us Dead then there would be no one to pay the taxes to finance their projects.

They are weakening the serfs so they can control them easier.
