How do they even know she is a woman? And if there is no difference between men and women, why do these stories always make a big deal about a woman doing things men do all the time?

People that climb Mount Everest typically start their climb 17,500 feet up. So they are barely climbing 12,000 feet in actuality, or about 40% of the actual mountain in terms of height.
Not trying to take anything away from them, it's certainly not for the faint-hearted, but it's not like they are starting at sea level and climbing the full 29,000 feet.

Great attitude, hope she has the grounding to pick her battles and the wisdom to make good choices.

I would think an 18 year old girl is a great age for a summit, probably the peak of their health and athleticism..

There are two superb books on the history of the climbing of Mt Everest; “The Third Pole” and “Into the Silence”.

OMG another first. Was she also the first to give the ‘shaka’ sign on the way to the top?
Why wasn’t she black (or maybe she is) then we could have had screaming headlines for the whole of next week. parades, interviews, breathless discussion of Presidential asperations.
Sheesh! Enough already
