It was his freshman year.
The University of Florida student had just returned from a night out drinking with friends in 2018 when he was caught by university police with a fake ID — one he said he wasn’t even using that night.
His friends had bought him alcohol, but he drank too much and fell asleep in the common area of Rawlings Hall, where his friend lived. A university police officer searched his wallet, he said, and discovered his fake ID. He remembered being told he might get an email from the university and that otherwise he was “good to go.”
Two months later, his parents received a letter in the mail from the Alachua County Court Clerk’s Office. The fake ID he had obtained for less than $100 would ultimately cost him about $2,500 — mostly in attorney’s fees.
University of Florida police have forwarded nearly four dozen felony complaints to state prosecutors against students caught with fake IDs over the past four years according to an analysis of court records conducted by reporting students at UF’s College of Journalism and Communications. Outcomes varied, but out of 45 cases all charges were either dropped or reduced to misdemeanors.

In the 70’s I got into a disco with a friends parking ticket as ID...things were a little different back then
Sorry. Play stupid games and win stupid prizes. Some places nothing would happen at all, but down South in a red state... not a good idea.
I never had a fake ID, though when I was in college, the drinking age was 18. I still think it should be 18.
I remember being in N.O. one weekend on pass from my base at Biloxi in 69. I asked a bartender, “How old to I have to be and what kind of ID do I need for a Vodka Collins?”
He looked at me dead pan and said, “One Dollar”
“Consequences” is an alien concept to many.
Only illegals are allowed fake id’s and ssn’s.
ID's aren't just used for buying alcohol. They are used for boarding aircraft and entering secure buildings. Likewise the penalties for possessing and using fake ID's have escalated.
I had one at FSU. Me and a trillion other students. The whole world is falling apart but they still have time to prosecute college kids. 🙄
Makes one wonder just how much of all that student loan money is actually spent on college. Cash is king and virtually untraceable.
I made a fake ID out of my mother’s old/expired driver’s license in Tennessee in the mid 70’s. The ID’s didn’t have pictures and were just light green cards with info typed in the form fields. With a little precision erasing and a similar typewriter you could modify the text pretty easily. We had two typewriters in the house, my mother’s and my sister’s and my mother’s matched almost exactly.
I used that thing for quite a while, as I went through the times when at first the drinking age was 18, then a few months later changed to 18 for beer and 21 for liquor and then a few moths later 19 for both and then a few months later 21 for both.
Don’t you just hate politicians!
Between being an airline pilot and being in the military I've been traveling around the globe for 30 years. Never once have I been asked for an ID in a foreign country yet in the U.S. we're obsessed with making sure alcohol never touches the lips of a 20 year old. In Germany the drinking age is 16, in Italy you'll see ten year old's drinking wine in a restaurant. Amazingly the world doesn't blow up when this happens. These countries also have far fewer problems with alcoholism than the U.S.
In the U.S. today we treat a 20 year old with a beer like he's carrying a kilo of meth. That same 20 year old can be given a machine gun and told to go kill terrorists to keep all of us safe. Meanwhile we'll let some pervert nutcase convince a five year old boy that he's really a girl and pump him full of drugs in preparation for cutting off his genitals.
Our priorities are so screwed up in this country.
In the mid to late 70’s I was in Stillwater at OSU.
You could drink in bars with a student ID no matter your age.
Legal age in OK was 21. They just gave up in Stillwater.
Yes, but back then we could drink at 18, when we could also vote (which I did), and join the military (which I did). I understand the problem with binge social drinking and alcohol abuse, but the age should be reset to 18, else take their vote away and bar them from the military or draft until 21. Either they are adult citizens or not.
Not so expensive but just as meaningful - having to go tell the older brother...
I wonder what they would do if you had a fake vax card?
What happened to the UF I used to know. SMH.
Then it’s Bandstand, Disneyland, growin’ up fast
Drinkin’ on a fake I.D.
Yeah, and Rama of the jungle was everyone’s Bawana
But only jazz musicians were smokin’ marijuana
Yeah, I wish I had a pencil thin mustache
Then I could solve some mysteries too
