Unfortunately I find myself in the market for a new car. My 2007 Ford Expedition has had over $3500 in repairs since January and now it’s back in the shop. Mechanic is telling me it needs a $4800 oil pump job. I cannot afford that. Have to say there are some SLIM pickings on the new car lots. I have all but ruled out a new Ford because of price and fuel economy. Would love another Mazda but unfortunately the local dealership closed back during the shut down. I’ve checked for used cars and they are all high mileage and most cost almost the same as a new one! It’s insane!! FJB

I hate to tell you... but it is time to find a new mechanic.

There must be something real special about the location of the oil pump in your Expedition for a simple oil pump costing 4800.00.

Look at a Toyota Highlander it is the ONLY Lrge SUV worth the money. They will easily go 300000 miles if you do basic maintenance

"Unfortunately I find myself in the market for a new car."

I'm on the tail-end of my first 3 year car lease. I traded in my 2005 Nissan Altima for a 2019 Nissan Sentra. I hated the car from the beginning, because it didn't have the power seats, and extras that my Altima did, but I didn't want to pay a lot of money each month for a car that would sit most of the time in my parking space.

At 74, I rarely go anywhere other than doctor appointments, and the grocery store. I periodically visit my oldest son who lives two hours away, and up until this year, I was driving from New York to Indiana once a year to visit my youngest son for a couple of weeks. He's moving back here soon, so I won't be making that trip anymore. I had a 12,000 mile a year plan. After 2 years and 8 months, the car just turned 12,000 miles. I don't want to buy the car outright, so will be trading it in for another leased vehicle. The salesman at the dealership started calling me two months ago to see if I was interested in a deal. They want to get rid of what they have on their lot, but I'm not ready to trade it it. At the time he called, I had fractured my knee, and told him to call me back in May. He called me the other day, and I had to tell him I'd tested positive for Covid over the weekend, and that I wouldn't be able to do anything for a while. I'm really not interested in an early deal unless he makes it worth my while.

Interesting that you are looking at Mazda.
A friend just had his 20 year old Honda Accord (288k miles?) become too expensive to repair. Ended up at a Mazda dealership to buy a used 2019 CX-5. Slim pickings is the word.

If that's a 5.4 V8 engine, that's almost double the guesstimate in my head. The oil pump on that engine is mounted flat to the front of the engine block and can be removed without dropping the oil pan. The radiator, water pump and engine accessory belts and pulleys all have to be removed for access, but it's not an "engine out" type repair.

Did you get an oil pressure warning that led you to go to the mechanic?

You can not afford a 4800 dollar repair but you can afford a new vehicle.

The economics of that does not make any sense.

For $4800 you should be getting a new engine. Well, almost.

$4800 for an oil pump is mighty steep. the part from Rock Auto tops out at about $170 for a standard replacement. If it takes your mechanic 8 hours to replace it - and it should take considerably less than that - he’s getting about $575 an hour. You probably have to pull then engine, but he should be able to do that without too much trouble

2007 Ford Expedition Mechanic is telling me it needs a $4800 oil pump job

Autozone $115-$240. Install labor does not cost $4,500. Unless there is something you are not saying - find another shop

Mechanic is telling me it needs a $4800 oil pump job.

Sounds excessive, as in 3-4 times what it should cost.

What do you mean “oil pump job”? If the oil pump goes out, it usually trashes the entire engine. A rebuilt engine shouldn’t cost halt that.
