How Ukraine Uses Obsolete Soviet Grenades To Destroy Russian Tanks From Above

Ukrainian fighters have found a new use for outdated grenades that is proving spectacularly effective at destroying Russian tanks and other armored vehicles.

This photo released by Aerorozvidka, an organization that develops Ukraine's use of small drones in warfare, shows a Ukrainian-made octocopter drone with two bomblets mounted beneath it.

Videos recently released by Aerorozvidka show what appears to be the same, tail-finned explosives being dropped by drone before destroying armored vehicles with catastrophic explosions. Weapons trackers following the conflict in Ukraine have identified the bomblets as modified Soviet-era RKG-3 anti-tank grenades with 3D-printed tail fins attached to stabilize their fall from drones…..

Might have to rethink the whole acquiring a 3D printer thing...

No wonder the Russians abandon their tanks.

How do they (remotely) pull the pins? Or do these rounds go off on simple impact?

The Democrats didn't invade Ukraine. Russia did. Nobody made them do it.

More importantly, virtually nobody expected Ukraine to put up anything close to the fight they've put up. The overwhelming expectation -- pushed by the vaunted Colonel Douglas McGregor among many others Putin sycophants -- was that Ukraine would get stomped in very short order, Putin would annex whichever parts of the country he wanted, and that would be it. Rather than the invasion leading to "regime change" in Moscow, the expectation was that this invasion would lead to the collapse of an impotent NATO, and would greatly strengthen Putin's position in Russia.

That reality pretty much trashes the claim that the invasion was all part of some Democrat plot for regime change in Moscow, rather than Putin just being a megalomaniacal douchenozzle.

The grenade contains a drogue parachute (visible at right inside this museum cutout), that springs out when thrown to ensure the grenade hits the target fuze-first.

On impact, the RKG-3 detonates a shaped charge (demonstrated in yellow in this cutout) that fires a hypersonic slug of copper with enough force to penetrate more than 20 centimeters of armor.

The burst of superheated metal into the interior of tanks can sometimes lead to "catastrophic" explosions of the ammunition inside.

Sounds like pulling the pin just arms it and the impact does the rest.

The 3D printers seem so slow. They must have hundreds of them running all the time to keep up.

3D printed tail fins is an uber nice touch.

Lol, sure, the Democrats magically were able to mind control Putin and force him to invade another country.

Both, actually. The pin must be pulled, but there must also be an impact. So either they pull the pins before sending them aloft (most likely), or rigged up something to pull the pins remotely. But I’d bet on the former.

From Wikipedia:
RKG stands for Ruchnaya Kumulyativnaya Granata (”handheld shaped-charge grenade”). The grenade has an odd strap-like lever (or “spoon”) that covers the base of the handle and runs up each side of the handle. When the pin is pulled, the “spoon” falls away, and when the grenade is thrown a spring deploys a four-panelled drogue parachute. This parachute stabilizes the grenade in flight and ensures that the grenade strikes the target at a 90 degree angle, maximising the effect of the shaped charge. Realistic accurate throw ranges are within 15 to 25 metres (49 to 82 ft). The lethality radius is within two metres (6.6 ft) due to concussion and fragmentation. The casualty radius is within 20 metres (66 ft) and the danger space from fragmentation is within 50 metres (160 ft) meters.

The fuze in the handle activates the grenade. When the parachute deploys, its ejection throws a weight to the rear of the handle and disables the safety. When it impacts or stops, inertia causes the weight to fly forward and hit the spring-loaded firing pin, which activates the primer detonator in the base. This sets off the booster charge in the base of the shaped charge, detonating and enhancing the main charge. The sensitive fuze guarantees that the grenade will detonate if it impacts any target.

Armour penetration depends on the model. The original RKG-3 used a basic shaped charge with a steel liner and could penetrate 125 millimetres (4.9 in) against Rolled Homogeneous Armor (RHA). The RKG-3M used a copper-lined shaped-charge warhead and had a penetration of 165 mm; the RKG-3T had an improved copper liner that had a penetration of 170 mm. The RKG-3EM has a larger warhead and boasts a penetration of 220 millimetres (8.7 in).

“The 3D printers seem so slow.”

There ways to dramatically speed them up. Just by picking a larger nozzle size and some slicer setting tweaks you could print those fins 10x faster than the out of the box hobby settings.

I think most people and certainly government don’t realize that technology has again changed the face of warfare beyond measure

Think we have hit an inflection point where a motivated populace can effectively defend themselves against military far more effectively than even 20 years ago

Some of the 3d printed stuff I’ve seen is far beyond what is commonly referenced or understood to be common

It is clear that the west provoked Putin to invade. The current head of the CIA wrote the “Nyet means Nyet” memo in 2008 while the ambassador. They knew that attempts to bring Georgia or Ukraine into NATO would 100% certainly provoke Russia to invade. This is why they ramped up the NATO talk as soon as Biden took office.

If I told you... “Don’t scream at me or I will punch you with 100% certainty. I am not bluffing. I will punch you if you scream at me.”...and then you screamed at me, you would intentionally be provoking me to punch you. It doesn’t mean that I would be right. It doesn’t mean that I was justified. But it would mean that you knew the consequences of your actions and chose to do it anyway.

With that being said, the Democrats AND the Republicans supported the coup in 2014, courted the Ukraine leaders to join NATO and precipitated this war for the BILLIONS of dollars they have funneled to the charities (Clinton Foundation) and weapons manufacturers because that money gets funneled back to them.

The outcome has been devastating. Hundreds of thousands will die needlessly. Russia would have been able to take and hold territory if Ukraine wasn’t playing the dangerous game of using US intelligence and special operators. I just really hope that Russia is never able to prove it because the consequences for Ukraine and the US will then be magnified 10 fold. Of course, when I say “the US” I am referring to the middle class and our service members. The billionaires and the political class will just end up making even more money.

The war began in 2014 when Russia made incursions into the globally recognized borders of sovereign Ukraine.

There were no sanctions before then. There were ZERO attacks on Russian territory before then or even after that for 6-7 years. Not a SINGLE attack on Russia happened except for the pinpoint strikes on supply depots and ships when Ukraine was under full invasion with their capital surrounded this year.

Ukraine held back and didn’t strike Russian territory ONCE even after the partial invasion for 6-7 years. Russia played themselves and were without a doubt the first to initiate military action on a sovereign nation...

Sure America did. Act aggressively against Russia, overthrow a friendly government, arm a hostile government, threaten nuclear missiles near Russian borders- America absolutely did compel Russian action. It has nothing to do with mind control, grow up.

America is a fascist state - remember the stolen election, political prisoners in DC jails, lockdowns, vanishing freedom of speech, large corporations working with government to squelch freedoms? Why defend America or the West? Is Russia wrong ? Sure. So is America. So is Ukraine, also a fascist state. Commies, Nazis, fascists - no good guys here.

Let’s stop playing “we are the good guys”, OK fellas? The U.S. government is no less dangerous and oppressive than the Russian one.

It's all about you, Skippy. The world did not begin until you were born, and will end when you die. There is no such thing as history, just the opinions you pull out of your wazoo aperture.
