Carnival Cruise Ship trip from Miami to Seattle overwhelmed by COVID, passengers say
Tampa Bay Times ^ | May 4, 2022 | Staff

SEATTLE — Passengers on a Carnival Cruise Ship that docked Tuesday in Seattle say more than 100 people aboard the ship tested positive for COVID-19 and the ship was overwhelmed.

Multiple people say they’re in quarantine at Seattle-area hotels after testing positive or being exposed to someone with COVID-19. Carnival Cruise Line would not confirm how many people tested positive, but said there were a number of positive cases, KING5 reported.

Darren Sieferston, a passenger on the cruise from Miami to Seattle, is in quarantine after testing positive. He said the crew’s response was chaotic.

“They didn’t have enough staff to handle the emergency that was happening, period,” said Sieferston. “They were overwhelmed and they didn’t have a backup course in how to handle about 200 people affected with COVID. We all suffered.”

I’m wondering if one of my customers wasn’t on this ship. He was all excited about going. Two week cruise that goes through the Panama Canal, starting in Florida and winding up in Seattle. He loves cruises and is fully vaxxed. I’ll have to ask him next month when he comes in to pay his storage.

Lets see - speculation of up to 100 with, tested positive, or exposed to COVID... Yet the same article quotes someone claiming 200 with COVID...
Oh- and how many were actually “sick”?
Are they still requiring vaccine proof or negative test before boarding?
Something stings...

That’s called a transition cruise - when they transition a ship from one market/itinerary schedule to another. Often they are pretty cheap - I’ve been looking at doing that with a Florida to Europe version - usually, a 14-day cruise that costs less than a normal 7 day. Often no ports of call - just sea days.

Thanks for the perfectly accurate information.

The population of my town is 2,500, the elevation is 3040, and the year of establishment is 1910. Total = 7,450. Also perfectly accurate information. And utterly useless.

Cruise ships make a perfect petri dish. You would not catch me on one of them.

Leaving for AK in a few weeks here, you now have to test negative no more that 24 hours before getting on the ship. Still leaves room for getting exposed on the plane.

We’re I flying directly to Anchorage and going directly to Denali National Park, this would be a non issue. Since I land in Vancouver and transfer from there, negative test within 24 hours required first. Ugghhh.

The reason that bizarre perspective doesn’t work is the US lost much more Life Expectancy than fully 19 peer developed countries, and in several of those (particularly UK) they locked down more severely.

Stop with this fear of being helpless. The virus doesn’t care if you’re afraid, so don’t be afraid. If you’re over 65, it can kill you regardless. What is pathetic is the world has had 2 years and has NOTHING to stop it.

BTW Life Expectancy can be quoted at birth or at any age.

The 1.8 years we’ve lost in the US is At Birth. It will ripple through the “at any age” table when Soc Sec gets around to updating it.

Avg male/female LE in the US is now 76.6. This is 5 yrs less than those 19 developed peer nations. US Covid deaths 3000/million. UK fewer and less LE loss, despite more rigid lockdown — and don’t misunderstand here. This does NOT mean lockdown reduced their deaths. There are no solid studies about that.

Very enjoyable last 7 months, taking in 5 cruises of less than 7 days each. I am finding out the 4 day cruises work best for me, because by then I am sick of eating more food, and my plants at home can handle 4 days without watering. Last cruise on 23rd of April was on Mariner of the Seas for 5 days and I had no desire to indulge in high calorie food on last day. Much better to do more cruises of short duration. The drive from house to Port Canaveral is only 90 minutes.

General question to all the cruising obsessed on FR . . . what is the strategy for being alone? Last I looked you had to pay extra because they expect to collect for 2 people per cabin.

Has that been fixed?

Those vaccines shore do work. I have a friend whose daughter lives in Cyprus. Her kid got sick and it took six up yer nose tests to declare it covid. All other tests were negative. They are covid crazies and ran all over the pace to get it determined as covid.

I will add, they were all fully vaccinated.

My experience has been astounding on 43 cruises so far.
Not only I never even caught a cold, but the opportunity to exercise in the magnificent gym, and eat better food than 99% of land based restaurants 3 or more every day without driving and parking the car, I ALWAYS come back feeling stronger and healthier. Then throw in live entertainment and live music every day, and I am hoping to get in 57 more cruises before kicking the bucket.

I was fully vaccinated with smallpox virus at age 6 or 7 and came down with smallpox at age 8 or 9. The vaccine could not build a virus proof filter in my nose, but the additional anti-bodies created by it is the reason I am still alive 71 years after recovery. Unvaccinated people have a 30%+ mortality rate from smallpox.

I made my last exercise video on my 80th birthday. Next one will be at age 90 and final one at age 100.
