A diet rich in protein, zinc and niacin and low in saturated fat makes blood vessels more flexible, research suggests (Reverse damaging cardio aging from food alone)

A study has linked key nutrients, including protein, zinc and niacin, to improvements in heart health.

Improvements in metabolic and cardiovascular health seen during weight loss in people with obesity are traditionally attributed to either the weight loss itself or the accompanying changes in glucose, blood pressure or blood fats.

Participants with metabolic syndrome and obesity (55.5% male, average age 53 years) were enrolled in a one-year intensive multidisciplinary weight loss program.

Arterial wall stiffening is linked to a heightened risk of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality and so blood vessel flexibility was used as a proxy for cardiovascular health.

Three different meaures of blood vessel flexiblity were taken: pulse wave velocity (PWV), common carotid artery intima media thickness (IMT) and flow mediated dilation (FMD).

One year on, BMI had fallen by 9.4% and all three measures of blood vessel flexibility had improved. FMD had improved by 47% on average, PWV had improved by 13% and IMT had improved by 1%.

The improvements in PWV were associated with reductions in calorie and saturated fat intake and with increases in zinc intake.

Zinc plays a key role in the synthesis of nitric oxide in the blood vessels. Nitric oxide helps relax the inner muscles of the blood vessels, leading them to widen.

The improvements in IMT were linked to reductions in calorie and saturated fat intake and increases in protein.

The improvements in FMD were linked to increases in niacin (vitamin B3) intake. Niacin is known to dilate blood vessels, mainly in the upper part of the body.

Researcher Dr. Brurya Tal says: "We found changes in the consumption of specific food components to be linked to better vascular structure and function.

"The zinc-rich foods in the diet plan were sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, nuts and meat. Meat and fish provided niacin."

No supplements were used to achieve the benefits, but it wound up being a close to a normal Mediterranean Diet approach.

Those measurements, without supplements helping, are incredibly promising to see. You can literally grow younger in a year, beyond what we normally think we can do. That change can stay with us or even continue to improve.

I’m on the Mediterranean diet. In 3 weeks I lost 12 pounds. After 3 months I’m down from 205 to 185. Waist from 35 to 32.

So I guess the only things a person should consume are meat (without the fat), vegetables, and water.

Even fruit are considered bad because they are too easily taken up by the body and are like eating sugar. Of course, all carbs are bad.

So maybe the southern diet of "meat and three" is best so long as the three are all veggies and the cook goes easy on the lard.

Those nutrients are abundant in lean beef, especially grass fed.

Food as medicine works well to prevent, halt and reverse many of the many diseases we now die from and likely will die with.

Don’t wait until you are fighting cancer or some other disease to discover the benefits and power of a whole food, food as grown diet and even small changes can make a big difference!

Do it now and very likely avoid what is destined to make you ever more miserable as you get older and take you out sooner if you keep eating and living the way you are now.

I was too hardheaded to do that for my own slow self, but only learned these truths when I needed to in order to help my dogs fight liver trouble and cancer.

The truth is out there if you want to find it or need to find it in order to help save a loved one or yourself.

Low saturated fats? Looks like we’re back to “eggs are bad”.
