The summer season is upon us and, per each year, we’ve dug beyond studio offerings (though a few potential highlights remain) to present an in-depth look at what should be on your radar. From festival winners of the past year to selections coming straight from Cannes to genre delights to some high-flying spectacles, there’s more than enough to anticipate.

Agreed. I liked the joker a lot better In that one too. I thought the one with Ben Affleck was ok too but not as good- he was supposed to do the new “The Batman” movie but dropped out. He would have made it a bit more tolerable had he played it. Katwoman in thr new the batman was not very good either, and the suit was horrible- what the heck, were the thinking? A ski mask? Guess their budget wasn’t very big. She looked rediculous with the ski mask halfway up her face most of the time. Even the penguin was lame. (I thought danny devito made a pretty good one- quirky anyways)
Did you see the Joker yet? Pretty good movie- whatshis name did a good job I thought. The harlequin movies are pretty good too. The women who, have played them have done a good job portraying a psycho woman. But the last one went too woke for me to enjoy much with the all female team with their overacting trying to be tough acting. (There is a fine line between overacting, and portraying a psycho woman who could beat the snot out of multiple tough guys at once- harley did a good job, but I thought the other women didn’t pull it off well- they just didnt seem to have “It” when it came to screen presence and moves to portrsy a psycho menace like harley did in my opinion) But was still an OK movie. Went into the history some of her and joker.
LOL.
Hollywood can’t make a decent, watchable film today. I have only found a slim handful of good films made since 2010, really since 2005. Of all of the movies I have watched since 2010, something less than 10 were really good or great. Another 10 or so were not a complete waste of time. Most of the rest I just pulled out of the DVD and sent back to Netflix unfinished.
That is why I have generally quit trying to watch anything made after 2010. I have been digging back into the past for mediocre movies of the 70s, 80s, and 90s that I previously missed. What was below average then is at least somewhat entertaining today, compared to the insulting worthless tripe being made today.
Hollyweird is a disaster. A gem sneaks out now and then, but by and large, nothing being put out by Hollyood today is worth a crap.
In fact, the newest movies I really liked watching were made in Australia, “Red Dog”, and “Oddball and the Penguins”.
I hate open ended storytelling. I am an Aristolean. Aristotle said a story must have a beginning, a middle and and end. There are a slim handful of movies where a lack of ending is thought provoking and worthwhile. Most are just... unresolved.
If you are going to tell me a story, I want it to be the whole enchilada, ending included. Wrap it up, and show me your vision of how and why it is resolved as such. Don’t cop out and just leave it up in the air.
A lot of movies have no ending because the writer/director has painted themselves into a corner. A lot of movies have no end because the producer does not want to take a stand or offend. It is often a cop out.
I hate most movies that fail to resolve the story with an ending.
That was Joaquin Phoenix (good actor). I thought the movie was long and tedious and didn't touch Heath Ledger's performance in The Dark Knight. Maybe I'm just partial to director Nolan for his dark trilogy, which I always thought was the idea behind Batman.
The first Batman movie with Michael Keaton was just lame, including Nicholson as the Joker. He played a silly comical goof. It went downhill from there until Batman Begins reboot.
You’re mostly right, in regard to my movie & TV watching.
The last commercial TV show I watched with any regularity was South Park. I know it’s still on but for some reason I fell out of the habit of watching it. Other than that, I haven’t paid much attention to network TV in years.
I’m not defining the following as “commercial\Network” TV, to me its “cable TV” so not “Network”. Maybe difference with a distinction. I did like “Vikings” for a while. However, its historical fiction element reached such a level of absurd that it got on my nerves too much to enjoy. I did last 4 seasons with “The Last Kingdom” however, the 5th season’s first episode succumbed almost immediately to “wokeness”, so I’m done with it.
In regard to movies, I mostly stumble into movies I like, and they are almost always foreign.
I love good Westerns.....
.....John Wayne did the best.....
...we took a trip to Monument Valley....
....a lot of his Westerns were made there.....JohnFord Westerns
During the past two Covid Fascist years, I have watched a lot of Gunsmoke ...( circa 1955-1974)
When men were men, and laws were followed and if not, justice followed
The best!!.
Do you know they got through 19 years without cursing!!,
...and Wagon Train
and
Clint Eastwood!
While many movies have and end to their particular story-line, what I hate is the need to set up a sequel or prequel. This is especially prevalent in action movies.
Plus, if I see one more female ripoff from vengeance originals, I'm gonna throw something at my 4k screen. I don't know how many I've started and stopped. Although, there have been a couple that worked with Jodie Foster in The Brave One and Jennifer Garner in Peppermint.
Yeah I didn’t like nicholson either- the writers failed on that character for sure. Now,thatni think back, Affleck was kinda mopey acting too a bit if I recall Right. But not as bad as this last one in the batman. Sheesh that movie is a letdown. I dont Blame you forshutting it off, you didn’t miss much. Unfortunately I have to watch a movie to,the end if I start it mostly. Though some are just so bad, so woke bad I do shut them off.
In the batman, even the batmobile was lame. Heck, nearly everything was lame.
After Nolan's batmobile and batcycle, how can they revert to lame? What, like as in the corny TV show? Hollywood franchise greed is an amazing thing as they screw up so many times.
I've seen small sci-fi movies like, "I Am Number Four" (2011) that was prime for a sequel. Some scenes were over the top, but premise, acting, and most dialog were worth a second look. The next adaption of book series was to be called, "The Power of Six". Michael Bay backed out for another stupid Transformer movie, so it died.
Last thought: I used to read much sci-fi in my youth. I still remember many novels and short stories that could be great movies if the producers really tried. I'm still waiting for someone to produce, "Childhoods End" by Arthur C. Clarke. Interesting tale of demon looking overlords taking control of Earth. Very good twist ending.
Ask me about my own screenplay, "Angel Flight", I wrote back in 1980, when CGI didn't exist and spec/effects could not reproduce my vision. I've submitted it to a few producers/studios, but they say no because many themes/productions have already used parts of my story. Oh well...I know it was ahead of its time. Still have the folder.
Yeah thay batcycle was a trip- it even looked and sounded tough/indestructible. As did the car. Not so in the batman sadly.
Hollyweird hasn’t made 40 movies in the entirety of this century that were worth 90 minutes of your life.
Ya got anything more recent? Older films are fine, but I'm particularly interested in what's in the chute. If nothing else, I would be inclined to make an extra effort to get to the theater to support a good culturally conservative film. That's the only vote that counts in this game.
I have a bad habit -- which I periodically promise (unsuccessfully) to reform -- of using the term "Hollywood" generically to refer to the entire film industry: theatrical movies, network and streaming tv, foreign and domestic. I know that's not accurate, but the film industry is so internationalized that it's a hard habit to break.
The film industry has always had its problems, but if it's gotten worse in the last ten years -- and I think it has -- at least part of the reason is consolidation and the rise of the streamers. Much of the industry is now being run by people who are in the business of selling subscriptions, not tickets to movies in theaters, and it shows. These are also global conglomerates with global platforms that want to sell generic content to generic international viewers, and it shows.
A lot of freepers express a preference for foreign films, as opposed to what "Hollywood" is producing. I'm sympathetic to that point of view, though I think excellent American films are still being made, disproportionately by the still independent smaller studios and the indies. Whatever. I am happy to get recommendations across all sectors. I don't particularly care who makes the good stuff as long as it still gets made and is available in the U.S. for viewing.
Yup. My problem being a motorcyclist all my life is how it cornered with fat duel rear tires. I would think that much of the abrupt turning stunts would be impossible. Then, what I do I know about modern stunt vehicles? Nice talking with you.
lol yeah, it was unrealistic to be sure- but still a cool rad lookin bike-
Now there is an idea. Add a W flag .
Going to see this tonight at our local $3 historic movie theater.
The Lost City, a comedy with Sandra Bullock. Hoping for a few laughs…

I enjoyed it. I probably watch too many serious movies. This is not one of them.
It may be the best thing I’ve ever seen Brad Pitt do. “My dad was a weatherman.”
Roxy Theater in Northampton, PA is a historic gem. It will be a pleasure going there tonight. Glad you liked The Lost City.
