The Australian government has responded to appeals by the Ukrainian Ambassador to Australia for providing heavy artillery weapons to the Ukrainian Armed Forces as the war intensifies in Donbas. “We need some heavy weaponry – we need jets, we need tanks, we need productive vehicles, we need heavy artillery, we need offensive weapons. We need some real stuff,” said the Ukrainian Ambassador to Australia, Vasyl Myroshnychenko, during an event hosted by the Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI) on April 26.“We are there in the trenches for your people basically – because if we fall, the consequences we’re going to see globally will be enormous,” Myroshnychenko further said while emphasizing the importance of the defense of Ukraine for defending the values of freedom and democracy.
The appeal came on the backdrop of Russia intensifying its military offensive in Donbas which has raised the need for more tanks and mobile artillery for the Ukrainian armed forces to take on the Russian mechanized battalions.
So, Australia has agreed to send six M777 155mm lightweight towed howitzers and howitzer ammunition to Europe in response to the urgent plea by the Ukrainian Ambassador.
….snip The M777 is said to be 41% lighter than the 7,154 kg (15,772 lb) M198 howitzer it replaces and it has become the benchmark for 155mm Lightweight Towed Artillery Systems. It is used by the ground forces of Australia, Canada, India, Saudi Arabia, Ukraine, and the United States.
The howitzer is equipped with a 39-caliber barrel and provides a maximum firing range of 24.7 km with standard rounds and 30 km with EFRB (Extended Range Full Bore) rounds. It can also fire the M982 Excalibur GPS-guided munition, which allows accurate fire at a range of up to 40 km….

“They are depleting our weapons, our money, and I guarantee using our intel.”
Of course they are using our Intel, and that is good. Biden’s domestic programs (using Ronald Reagan’s maxims) are depleting our money far faster than is any military aid we are giving to Ukraine. It was Reagan who armed the Afghans and that depleted Russian resources then, as it will do now.
That aid to Afghanistan went to the Mujahideen.
That worked out wonderfully.
I believe a man named Osama bin Laden was high ranking.
Money, weapons, and training to bin Laden...
A CIA orchestrated coup 8 years ago got us to where things are today.
They’d better be keeping them for use against China.
“That aid to Afghanistan went to the Mujahideen.
That worked out wonderfully.”
Yes. It helped destroy the economy of the USSR, prompting Gorbechev’s changes, promtping the end of the USSR. Good thing.
Nice selective quote.
How about addressing the arming, financing, and training of Osama bin Laden?...
Blame America first, right?
Useless virtue signaling that will have no impact on the war whatsoever.
Yes. We (CIA) were ignorant or ignored that the Pakistani allies, and the Middle East sources, had their own aims in the vetting of the Mujahadeen groups the U.S. helped supply weapons to - those third party sources did most of the vetting while our intel was mostly in directing the use (targets) of what we supplied. Their long term agenda was not ours and our folks either were just stupid or ignored it.
That said. It did hurt the USSR econonomically and miltarially, and it was one of the factors contributing to the end of the USSR.
I do not see that as a similar issue at all in the assistance to Ukraine. The military of Ukraine is not going to become an enemy of the U.S. It is now inevitable that at the end of it all Ukraine will become part of NATO if not integrated with the rest of western Europe one way or another on military/security matters.
The one thing Biden could have said to Putin, and a President Trump may have said to Putin in February 2022, is “if you (Putin) want to guarantee that Ukraine is going to become part of NATO, you can be sure your planned invasion will do just that”.
My main concern with the weaponry is black market sales, and collection of it via Chechen victories. (if any)
In the near future, what if stingers are just a ways outside of multiple airports? Lord knows our Southern border is porous.
As you stated about Biden, weakness invites hostility.
The Ukraine is extremely crooked, and I think you know that.
Just because something didn’t happen in the past in similar conditions, does not mean it won’t occur in the future. (nukes)
I think we’re going to find out either way, because things aren’t winding down, but digging in and growing.
Combine that with a potential global recession, and that’s when governments love wars.
“The Ukraine is extremely crooked, and I think you know that.”
And Russia has no corruption and neither does the U.S. LOL
Corruption in Ukraine is neither a cause nor an excuse for Putin’s invasion.
Once again you selectively pick one sentence.
Don’t bother posting to me again.
You’re intellectually disingenuous.
Ditto back at ya.
No, but we've done that a hell of a lot more than Russia has.
Blame warmongering geopolitical terraformers first.
You’re from New York and you think Ukraine is corrupt?
“Why would Putin incinerate or poison the land he is working so hard to seize?”
Previous post:
“What could Putin do...”
“Order Russian nuclear strikes against the same geographic areas that Russia is currently fighting a war to acquire?”
He has never threatened to nuke the Ukraine. He is warning the Europeons that he will use nukes against them.
You did not understand my original post.
I said the USA should give Ukraine nuclear missiles that will be stationed in the geographic areas that Putin wants most.
If Putin attacks with conventional forces, Ukraine would launch the nukes at the Russia home land.
If Putin fires nukes against the Ukraine nukes, then the land Putin wants will become radioactive and completely useless.
You don't like how the Ukrainians, too, have been invading neighboring countries?
You don't like how the Ukrainians, too, have been threatening the West with a nuclear holocaust?
Oh, wait! That's right! Only the Russians have been doing that!
The Ukrainians have been doing nothing on a par with what the Russians have been doing! There is thus absolutely no justification for attempting to establish a moral equivalency between the Russians and the Ukrainians.
Regards,
You want to "fight China?"
The best way we Americans can "fight China" now is to stop buying their junk. It is to re-industrialize America.
