Raiders of the Lost Ark in 1981, which took special effects one full step past the original Star Wars film that came out in 1977.
Escape from New York.
Brazil, how truly apt is was would not be known till later.
Oh, and one of my two favorites, Risky Business.
A Christmas Story. “You’ll shoot your eye out.”
Repo Man was all I could think of.
I can think of a number of 80’s movies but they’re crap.
Blade Runner
Die Hard
2 favs but might from the 90s
Worst: Popeye.
Damn, that was bad.....
Michael J Fox for Secret of My Success
I loved Top Gun. Part of which was filmed on my ship when I was in the Navy. Unfortunately it was filmed just prior to my arrival on board. Good flick though. Got really tired of hearing the music though whenever we would pull into port. They’d also run marathons of the movie when we were out to sea.
First of all, there were way too many sci-fi, teen identity crises and fantasies in the 80s.
That said, there are some memorable films, even some of the ones in those categories.
Field of dreams just flat feels good.
Nat Lampoon Vacation broke some ground in humor.
Princess Bride is a memorable classic (Mark Knopfler’s score is not to be missed)
Terminator is a classic and started a fun series
Raiders was exciting and memorable
Die Hard was one of the greats
Highlander. There can be only one.
The simple story line and now routine aerial stunts of Top Gun fare better in memory than in a new viewing. And The Return of the Jedi suffers not just from those damn Ewoks but from Lucas's detachment from the discipline of supervision by studio suits. Success can subvert talent in ways that struggle and hardship do not. The Star Wars films after the first two had bigger budgets, virtually guaranteed audiences, and massive revenue from toys and ancillary products but failed to offer much in the way of story-telling magic.
I liked Date with an Angel. Very sweet and wholesome.
🤣 It was, it truly was.
Great movie. However, different endings in different countries showed how rampant message tailoring is in the “communication” industry.
I can’t even think of a bad movie in the 80’s. It was a great decade for movies.
Back to the Future, Empire Strikes Back, Trading Places, Beverly Hills Cop (1984), Top Gun, Witness, Working Girl, Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles, Gorky Park, Mississippi Burning, and Die Hard would be among my nominees for the best.
Howard the Duck, Beverly Hills Cop 2, Dead Poets Society are among the disappointments.
GLORY, LAST OF MOHEGANS, LAST SAMURAI
