A 13-year-old boy from Minnesota will soon earn his bachelor's degree from college - with a major in physics and a minor in math - and has been accepted into the University of Minnesota's Physics PhD program.

Now his parents are trying to figure out how to pay for it.

Elliott Tanner, known as a profoundly gifted child, is maintaining a 3.78 grade point average at the University of Minnesota and is participating in undergraduate research while also tutoring classmates.

He wants to be a high-energy theoretical physicist and eventually a professor of physics at the university, however, tuition costs for the graduate program have been an obstacle, his mother, Michelle Tanner, said.

“Kid’s so smart, let him figure it out.”

LOVE IT!!! But I also agree - he’s not my problem, or your problem.

Maybe contact Eon Musk or somebody.
He could work for a couple of years for him after getting his PhD.

Most colleges would jump on this...He could be really, really immature or socially inept. Who knows.

This story is really suspect. Tuition is only $18K for the full year. a 13YO in his home town shouldn’t be living on campus and thus paying room and board. Plus they’ve got $3K+ of “personal” expenses in there, etc.

Lots of PhD programs include graduate assistant/undergrad teaching gigs that pay for tuition. If that is tied to the kid not getting a regular funding package, so be it. He should be able to take a course or two at a time and do independent research while he’s at it. Trying to break some sort of record in the age at which he is given a PhD proves and accomplishes nothing.

“She had trouble with Egypt. So my daughter gave a clue “north west africa” bingo she got it immediately.”

Sounds like the kid needs some lessons in Geography.

Maybe it’s just me, but I have a hard time envisioning a 13 year old going for a PhD at that age.

I get it, he’s brilliant and an Einstein mind. What is his emotional maturity IQ, if that can even be measured?

I had my granddaughter reading and doing numbers at that age, too. All it took was a chalkboard, flash cards and talking to her so she understood WHAT she was doing.

It was fun.

I also taught her the times table and script...because they stopped teaching them.

Can’t this kid go to work and Pau for his own PHD? No reason a 13 year old can’t do some work.

I’d have thought a college would be eager to provide a scholarship to a 13 year old Eisenstein for the publicity angle.

the mind is such a complicated thing. I am amazed at what happens with some children like this 6 year who plays the piano

The first thing I thought of when I read this article was that the problem is that he is white.
