These Are The Old Car Features That Should Make A Comeback
Jalopnik ^ | 19 April 2022 | Adam Ismail

Here's to the days of big windows, bumpers built for bumping and foot-operated controls.

Round, Sealed Headlights Yeah, I know they’re not the greatest aerodynamically, but replacing a bulb on a modern car sometimes requires partially disassembly of the front end just to get at the bulb.

My co-worker just spend $225 to replace ONE BULB on her Acura

Amber Rear Turn Signals The safety of tri-colored tail lights. Red for stop. Amber for turn or hazard. White for reverse.

Replaceable Head Units Or better yet, just make it an actual iPad so I can replace it with a better one that runs an app of the car’s software.

Imagine if you could pop off that dumb less-useful-than-a-tablet tablet on top of any given Mazda’s dashboard and fit an iPad that actually works.

Not-Power Windows Crank windows. More reliable than power windows, much finer control over movements, and I don’t have to turn the ignition on to use it.

Have you seen the Dodger Charger and Challenger? The body is almost identical to the early 70’s version of the same car.

Same thing for the Ford Mustang and Chevy Camaro.

I think self driving technology will be a good thing for the elderly, who through no fault other than nature can no longer safely drive, but still want that personal autonomy to travel at their will. Technology will achieve that, not regressing.

Keep car thieves in jail and we can go back to having simple cheap car keys without transponders.

I remember when keys were always in our unlocked cars and house doors were unlocked as well. Different world today and we have earned it.

“I’ve often wondered which is easier: pushing with your foot on that button, or having to reach up with your arm and do it from the console?”

If you are drunk it takes several tries to find the switch with your foot.😎

Also, remember when you started the rig by stepping on the mechanical starter actuator? Right near the gas pedal.

Some were even under the foot feed or under the clutch pedal.

I bought a 1975 GMC pickup in 1982. My father and I had to fabricate a new floor board out of 14 gauge galvanized steel plate for the drivers side. When I bought it there was a hole about 8” across that you could see the ground through.

I also had to replace the high beam switch because it was rusted out.

From Ohio across to Albany are where all the rock salt mines are in the eastern half of the country. There is a big one just on the north side of rt 90 just east of Buffalo. There are others south of Rochester and Syracuse. Rock salt is cheaper there than sand.

“I think self driving technology will be a good thing for the elderly, “

As an “elderly”, I agree. I worry about possibly losing self sufficiency in the not-too-distant future. This would be a great help. Traveling for the basics close to home like doctors’ appointments, church, grocery store and such would be do-able. Having independence as long as possible is a good thing.

“From what I gather, people in the 50s, 60s, and 70s used to really love their cars, as well as lust in them. lol”

You got that right mate! A lot of High schools in the 50’s had auto shop classes where a lot of guys actually learned a useful trade which they parlayed into lucrative jobs. Young guys were MUCH more interested in cars and didn’t mind grease under their finger nails.

REAR.WHEEL.DRIVE.

Want a CHOICE. Want it bad in an affordable mid range sedan/coupe.

Some cars in the 50’s had auto dimmers, push button gear selectors, and I think a starter button that cranked when you depressed the clutch.

I might add the dual purpose jack handle isn't long enough to provide enough leverage to loosen the lug nuts for many people.

Most new cars today come with roadside service if not AAA offers it very cheaply, Truth is most driving today is on modern highways. I have probably had one flat in the last 40 years, the first 40 years I had them weekly, so everyone knew how to patch a tube because they had too. Now everyone has a cell phone and help is only a call away. If you live in a 2nd amendment state you can wait safely, at least not undefended.

They stand out when see them in the normal flow of bland look-alike traffic. Once in awhile I spot an old restored 50’s classic on the road and it warms the cockles of my heart!😀

But, face it, autos have improved and I say good riddance to some of the old ways.

Yep I remember 40 years ago bragging to a kid that they just do't make them like they used to and he said they sure don't and I am glad they don't. After working on my stuff all my life I own things that just keep on ticking. I am posting this from a 2009 MacPro that I run 24/7 and I have another that I use as a server same age, as well as several Mac Minis of the 2012 variety, I also have some new Mac Silicon machines as well as iPads that just run, I gave away a first gen iPad the other day that still runs fine.

Cars are another matter they quite easily run 100,000 an 2 or 3 even 5 hundred thousand with regular maintenance. I used to be in the auto parts business 50 years ago and it was a ritual every summer to stock up on freon, belts, hoses and tuneup kits because cars would need them. I haven't even as much as added water to a car in fifteen years.

Of course I remember! My ‘65 GTO has one! Wind wings, too! AND, rollup windows. AND, I can get to stuff under the hood. AND, it does not have 250 computers that can go on the FRitz whenever they please!

And, you NEED to hear it in full song!
