There is a very clear explanation for the decline in respiratory deaths.

When people die from influenza + pneumonia, the Underlying Cause of Death (UCOD) is listed as pneumonia about 90% of the time.

In sharp contrast, when people die from Covid + pneumonia, the UCOD is listed as Covid 100% of the time.

Since 45%-50% of Covid deaths involve pneumonia, this is a huge number of respiratory related deaths that just completely disappears from the statistics.

Let's drill down a bit in the data collected by the National Center for Health Statistics, comparing "deaths involving COVID" (as recorded on official death certificates by local physicians and/or hospitals and as reported to the NCHS by each state health department) for the nine months of the pandemic, beginning in April and continuing through December, for both 2020 and 2021. Let's further break out the data by the youngest age cohorts.

For the 0-17 year-old cohort: 192 COVID deaths in 2020 / 489 COVID deaths in 2021. This is an increase of 155%.

For the 18-29 year-old cohort: 1,438 COVID deaths in 2020 / 3,221 COVID deaths in 2021. This is an increase of 124%.

For the 30-39 year-old cohort: 4,125 COVID deaths in 2020 / 9,577 COVID deaths in 2021. This is an increase of 132%.

For the 40-49 year-old cohort: 10,981 COVID deaths in 2020 / 20,841 COVID deaths in 2021. This is an increase of 90%.

Again, these are the total deaths recorded and reported for the months of April through December for both 2020 and 2021. That time frame has been chosen here in order to provide for an apples-to-apples comparison (e.g., comparing COVID deaths in March 2020, when the pandemic was just getting started, to such deaths in March 2021 would give anomalous results, as would, of course, comparing the months of January and February).

Make of these data what you will, but on their face they indicate that there were more -- indeed, considerably more -- deaths involving COVID in those below the age of 50 in the U.S. in April through December of 2021 compared to that same time frame in 2020. What might possibly explain this increase? What was different in 2021 compared to 2020?
