The official death numbers are compiled in one week intervals by the National Center for Health Statistics.
That means that every sixth year the NCHS needs to add a 53rd week to catch up because 7 X 52 = 364 plus one Leap Year.
The catch up 53rd week came either in December 2020 or January 2021.
Coincidentally, the 53rd week had the third largest death toll in modern times - 86,800.
The first and second largest in modern times were the first two weeks of January 2021 - 86,880 and 87,224.
