BELGRADE, Mont. — Game wardens with Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks are seeking information on a person of interest in an illegal baiting case three miles south of Belgrade.

During the investigation trail cameras took photo of the man investigators believe to be associated with the illegal bait pile located at Cameron Bridge Fishing Access Site.

The following was sent out by Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks:

Game wardens with Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks are seeking information on a person of interest in an illegal baiting case at Cameron Bridge Fishing Access Site.

On Oct. 16 wardens received a tip of an illegal bait pile at the site, which is about 3 miles south of Belgrade. Wardens confirmed the tip and found corn and apples there.

During the investigation, wardens obtained trail camera photos of a man believed to be associated with the site. Wardens are asking for the public’s help to identify the man. Anyone with possible information is asked to call the FWP violation reporting hot line at 1-800-TIP-MONT. Callers may be eligible for a cash reward of up to $1,000.

State law (MCA 87-6-401) prohibits anyone from hunting or attempting to hunt game animals using bait. Baiting includes the placing, exposing, depositing, distributing or scattering of food sources as a lure or attractant.

State law (MCA 87-6-216) also states that a person may not provide supplemental feed attractants to game animals or wild turkeys by purposely or knowingly providing supplemental feed attractants in a manner that results in an artificial concentration of game animals or wild turkeys that may potentially contribute to the transmission of disease or that constitutes a threat to public safety.

Now, when I leave corn out for the BIRDS, I always post a sign that the corn is for BIRDS ONLY and anyone else taking the corn risks being shot.

These deer around here are clearly products of the public education system, however.

What was he hunting? Deer? Isn’t it interesting how we can get a crystal-clear snapshot of a hunter out in the woods (anyone who knows him will recognize him, but will they squeal?) but high-tech security cameras meant to catch serious criminals seem to produce grainy, blurry images . . . when they’re turned on. “Be on the lookout for a male . . . last seen wearing clothes . . .”

Well at least for dove, you can plant a crop like corn or millet and then bush hog it and leave all of the grain on the ground. Not considered baiting. Taking bags of cracked corn or bags of millet and scattering it on the ground is baiting. In practical terms I don’t really see the difference, but one is considered normal agricultural practice and the other will get you a very heavy fine.

Here in the South people have tried broadcasting winter wheat on top of the ground citing it as a ‘normal agricultural practice’, but that usually doesn’t fly with either the state game wardens or in the case of migratory birds, the federal game wardens.

Anyone know if there is a game cam that pans right and left like that one seems to?

Oregon hunters have learned not to use jelly donuts in illegal bait piles. A real cop-magnet.

While the backgrounds look very similar I’m not sure they’re from the same camera. The background trees look different. Could also be from a wide video shot though awfully sharp for that.

Wonder if the salt lick I put out would be considered baiting? We enjoy watching the occasional deer that use it.

So, what do y’all think about game wardens, those folks who don’t have to have a warrant to barge into your house and check your freezer? Asking for a friend.
