Watch: Target Shopper Rushes In to Try to Stop Shoplifter, Yanks Bin Away

A citizen stepped in to try and stop a shoplifter from leaving a Target store, telling the suspect to “get a f***ing job.”

Crime reporter for California news station KTVU, Henry K. Lee, posted a video of the confrontation to Twitter.

The citizen, who wished to be known as Tiger, confronted the suspect at the entrance of the store and attempted to pull the bin of merchandise from his hands.

Tiger later yelled at the suspect, “Stop that s**t man! Get a f***ing job.”

Tiger later told the news station, “If you see something wrong, you better do something.”

According to police, the citizen witnessed the suspect putting roughly 40 to 50 pairs of jeans worth $2,000 in the bin, as the station reported.

“I just flipped the box so things spread out, so people watching me can see what’s going on, so they can tell which one is the bad guy, which one is the good guy,” Tiger said.

Colma police Cmdr. Sherwin Lum told said law enforcement “definitely appreciate citizens being very good witnesses” instead of stepping in to directly take action.

Lum added, “We highly recommend not to intervene or get physical with any of these suspects because again, the safety of the public is paramount.”

The station noted Tiger says he went out to follow the suspect into the parking lot “where he dropped the jeans and tried to get onto a bus.”

Tiger explained he feels good “doing the right thing.”

He continued, “I think if we speak up and do the right thing, life is much better and you sleep better at night.”

The defendant is reportedly in jail and has been charged with burglary and grand theft.

In November 2021, CNN reported “smash and grab” crimes swept upscale stores in major cities in the United States.

Pete Eliadis, a former law enforcement official and founder of security company Intelligence Consulting Partners, told the outlet the crimes had “nothing to do with the pandemic.”

He added, “The pandemic is overused at this point.”

People are getting sick and tired of police not doing much because prosecutors aren’t doing jack due to “social justice”. It promotes vigilante behavior, and you’re going to see more of this.

How is allowing a consequence-free atmosphere of criminality and public thievery and looting contribute to "public safety?"

Shoplifter got away, but...

I’m not sure the concerned citizen should have intervened, since, with a more violent shoplifter, it could have cost him his life.

Let the store take action and move out of the neighborhood and perhaps out of the state.

I stand tall and salute this concerned citizen, but he took an awful lot of risks. He could have gotten knifed right there in the lobby. Then he follows the thief outside in the dark of night. Every Target I go to has either a Security Guard standing up front or one of the Red Shirted Staff standing their to check receipts. Where were they at?

The citizen probably doesn’t want his Target store to close.

That's the problem. In bad or borderline neighborhoods, people know that if they allow shoplifting to go unchecked, eventually they will not have a store nearby and will be forced go travel miles (usually by bus) to purchase what they need. This is why, during the 2020 riots in Philadelphia for example, you had lines of regular folks out there defending grocery stores. There was a real fear that if you let the hoodlums destroy your neighborhood Acme or ShopRite, they wouldn't be coming back.

The defendant is reportedly in jail and has been charged with burglary and grand theft.

But, he's black and likely will be deemed poor and disadvantaged and a victim of society.

No punishment coming to him, especially since it occurred in California.

I actually shop at that Target in Colma, and I don’t think that it’s in danger of closing. They recently expanded the store, adding a larger grocery area and more self-checkouts.

Would I personally intervene? No. Are the cops right to discourage the public, for their own safety, to refrain from getting physical with shoplifters? Probably. BUT from a deterrent standpoint, it doesn’t hurt if the thieving bums out there start to worry that maybe, just maybe some random dude is going to “make his day” kicking their butt

But, the crime=ridden state won't prosecute and the 'victim' shoplifter will be out with the charges being dropped or with a slap in the hand. Besides, it's a matter for Target to decide on whether they want to stay and tolerate the crime, or to seek a less hostile environment. The citizen is likely one of those that voted for the government that tolerates the crime.

I agree. You never really know the outcome of such act, until it’s too late.

So true. There was a story out of Pennsylvania yesterday of a woman who recorded a toddler in a locked car. She was confronted by another woman (the mother?) who grabbed a bat from the trunk of the car and struck her with it. And when that wasn’t enough, ran over her with the car.
Just call the police.
