The Courtauld Gallery has been criticised for introducing a 'woke' new label on a Manet masterpiece that warns viewers of the 'unsettling' presence of a man.
The London gallery, which holds the UK's most prestigious collection of Impressionist paintings, reviewed its labelling as part of a £57million refurbishment.

Whats the problem? The guy is looking her squarely in the eyes.
A gentleman approaches a bar-maid at a bar, almost certainly asking for a drink of some sort, since bar-maids are there to provide drinks to gentlemen.
Heads explode.
For godssake, dude just wants a freakin drink.
No need to interpret art anymore. Zager and Evans predictions are coming true.
The Woke are so freakin’ prudish and, in a way, provincial that they make the Puritans look like libertines.
Yep they were only wrong about the year.
Meanwhile, the Daily Mail prints more “unsettling” images than any other paper in the world.
The insane kooks have moved from “trigger warnings” to “unsettling warnings.” Is that because “trigger” itself triggered a trigger warning?
What comes after an “unsettling warning”? A “You will need your blanky warning”? A “Thumb sucking warning”? A “Quivering mass of protoplasm” warning?
> woke ... Puritans
There have been analyses over the years to the effect that Puritanism has screwed up this country since its beginning, in that it’s sort of an American thing.
“barmaids at that time often had a 2nd job in the world’s oldest profession so the man could be an arrangement with her.”
Don’t validate their claims of misogyny. His eyes are looking at hers, not down at her cleavage. I know what you say is historically possible, but it’s not to be found in this painting.
Her expression appears jaded like she is asking...”Yeah bud, what’ll ya have?” She doesn’t look exploited to me!
Except for children. Can't sexualize them enough.
Weird, isn’t it? Horribly prudish on the one hand, and sickeningly perverse on the other.
One of my favorite pictures
Yeah, but he's thinking - stop day-dreaming, you dizzy broad, and make my SAMMICH!
Just watch.
Actually, what’s kind of fun about this picture is that it includes the first-person character in the image; it’s the artist, or even funnier, the viewer, in the reflection.
The thing is that she’s making a very genuine, emotional response while looking the first-person character in the eye. Combined with his inquisitive, eye-to-eye gaze, it seems less like she’s saying, “O, Gawd, what the **** do you want?” and more like she’s about to open up to him about how her day has REALLY been going.
And while it’s funny to imagine her telling the viwer, “Oh Gawd...,” it’s probably much more reasonable to suppose that as an artist, he was concerned with her mental state.
People have WAY too much time and money on their hands apparently.
I’d hit it.
