Liberals are perplexed by conservatives' increasing use of the word "groomer" to describe opponents of the Florida parental rights law and similar policies elsewhere. They are right that the term is hyperbolic at best and worst conflates a host of complex issues with pedophilia.
But liberals (and conflict-averse conservatives) are wrong to confidently predict it will necessarily be perceived by persuadable people as QAnon craziness. It's not entirely clear that many such people even know what QAnon is. And it is just as risky for liberals to reduce all concerns about child pornography and age-appropriateness of sex education to Pizzagate. The obsessions of the "Very Online" on both sides impoverish virtually any debate.
The conservatives who favor the term see it as no worse than bad-faith accusations of racism, which can be similarly career-ending and life-altering. And social conservatives know many of their opponents genuinely do regard their beliefs about human sexuality — still taught by many of the world's major religions — as bigotry morally indistinguishable from racial hatred. Public schools are supported by parents who hold both viewpoints and are not going to be able to easily accommodate this cultural divide.
Consequently, many conservatives are unsympathetic to complaints about "groomer," which they perceive is clearly touching a nerve. There probably ought to be a better, more nuanced word for people who make arguments about the instruction of children that are at least partly motivated by affirming adult identities, lifestyles, and beliefs. Instead, we have the bigot versus groomer brouhaha.
The smarter play for liberals than allowing themselves to get baited into treating all worries about children and sex as QAnon is to simply wait for the inevitable overreach to occur.

Don’t be surprised if the terms “Groomer” and even “Pedophile” are soon criticized as “hate speech” by the left and their flunkies in the media.

LOLOL...we are smack dab in the middle of horrendous “liberal overreach” where they pretend men can magically change into women, kids need to be indoctrinated at age 3 and 4 into perversions, parents can’t object to what their kids are taught in school, schools give kids puberty blocking drugs behind parents’ backs, sodomy is normalized, men can “marry” men, CRT teaches institutionalized race hatred, the “1619 Project” teaches our kids America was founded as a racist nation, etc.
Where is the Yahoo concern for THAT “overreach”?
Only a few decades ago, when everything was normal, not one bit of that crap was imaginable and all we heard from the homo lobby at the start of their overreach was “we want to be left alone in the privacy of our bedrooms.”

The objection to "groomer" is the same as that to "Let's Go Brandon." It's incredibly accurate.
To be fair, when I was a kid I saw Rocky Horror on cable without my parents around. I didn't grow up to dress like Frank or ask for reassignment surgery. I turned out normal.
That said, Rocky Horror wasn't played to my 2nd grade class with a teacher saying that Frank was perfectly normal.
The problem for the leftists, is that they initially said "oh, this is overblown... there is no agenda here. This is education..and science."
NOW, there is a growing body of evidence that educators and entertainment providers are ACTIVELY PROMOTING the story that Frank IS normal.
The genie can't be put back in the bottle.
When I heard the response to the anti-groomer law in Florida was, “Why do you hate gays?” I was astonished. That was an explicit conflation by gay supporters that they were in favor of pedophilia. What I expected was that gays and gay organizations would support the law because not supporting it is like disrespecting motherhood, apple pie and baseball. But the movement has reached the point where, of course they’re against motherhood, apple pie and baseball. How, at this point, could anyone think otherwise? I think that the water has been turned up too high too fast and the frog will finally jump out. Or, in another analogy, the pendulum will not just swing the other way, it will be blown off its point and be broken for the next several generations. Let’s hope so.

To those teachers who complain that they can't talk about their own families to the kids, I say that's what the Teachers' Lounge is for. Talk to your adult coworkers about your lifestyle, not the small children you were hired to teach.

You wish, jackass. We heard nothing of “hyperbole” during the past 60 years that leftists have been calling us, their friends relatives and neighbors “nazi” and “evil” and “racist” and thisaphobe and thataphobe and on and on.
When the right wing calls you a name they are DESCRIBING YOU LITERALLY. It’s not a cheap nasty tactic. There is nothing else to call these people. They are in fact discussing sex with children whom they want to influence toward their own bent predilections. THAT is grooming.
