Golf rules for Seniors

USGA 2022 RULE CHANGES IN EFFECT FOR Senior GOLFERS

Rule 9k.34– If a tree is between the ball and the hole, and the tree is deemed to be younger than the player, then the ball can be moved without penalty. This is so because this is simply a question of timing; when the player was younger, the tree was not there so the player is being penalized because of his age.

Rule 1.a.5– A ball sliced or hooked into the Rough shall be lifted and placed on the Fairway at a point equal to the distance it carried or rolled into the Rough with no penalty. The senior player should not be penalized for tall grass which ground keepers failed to mow.

Rule 2.d.6– A ball hitting a tree shall be deemed NOT to have hit the tree. This is simply bad luck and luck has no place in a scientific game. The senior player must estimate the distance the ball would have traveled if it had not hit the tree, and play the ball from there.

Rule 3.B.3– There shall be no such thing as a lost ball. The missing ball is on or near the course and will eventually be found and pocketed by someone else, thereby making it a stolen ball. The senior player is not to compound the felony by charging himself with a penalty.

Rule 4.c.7– If a putt passes over a hole without dropping, it is deemed to have dropped. The Law of Gravity supersedes the Rules of Golf.

Rule 5. – Putts that stop close enough to the cup that they could be blown in, may be blown in. This does not apply to balls more than three inches from the Hole. No one wants to make a mockery of the game.

Rule 6.a.9– There is no penalty for so-called “out of bounds”. If penny-pinching golf course owners bought sufficient land, this would not occur. The senior player deserves an apology, not a penalty.

Rule 7.G.15– There is no penalty for a ball in a water hazard, as golf balls should float. Senior players should not be penalized for any shortcomings of the manufacturers.

Rule 8.k.9– Advertisements claim that golf scores can be improved by purchasing new golf equipment. Since this is financially impractical for many senior players, one-half stroke per hole may be subtracted for using old equipment.

Please advise all your senior friends of these important rule changes.

Golf is...above all...a game of integrity.

When I’m 100, I’ll golf my age. I’ll wait.

I aim at the trees. They are 90% air, and the odds of me actually hitting what I’m aiming for are pretty bad. Looking forward to a weekend of watching real golfers.

The odds of shooting my age are pretty bad, but I am pleased to announce I have bowled my age many times.

My Saturday golf group adopted the “unfortunate lay” rule. This allows the golfer to move the ball a club length to improve the lay. The commissioner saw this rule at a course he once played. It comes in handy.

Years past, when with brother-in-law playing with my mother-in-law, we had a Nanny rule. In order to continue reasonable play time, we let Nanny put the ball where she wanted.

That is called cheating. Why don’t you just tee it up in the fairway? Just saying. But have fun.

RE: The unfortunate lay rule

Is it really cheating if you are not playing in a tournament or betting on holes? Even pros play practice rounds before their official tourneys where they will place the ball in particular locations to practice shots they might be stuck with over the weekend.

If you do count one of these rounds and enter it into the handicap system, it only hurts you as you will get a lower handicap than you ought. This is the opposite of the truly detestable practice of "sandbagging".

I personally like to play the ball as it lies because I like the challenge. However, if you are playing a round just to get out of the house and be with friends, or if you are much worse than your playing partners, then it might make sense to improve your lie so that you can focus on chatting with them rather than muttering to yourself and wanting to throw down your clubs in frustration.

We play for $5. The unfortunate lay rule is available to everyone. We also play putts inside the leather are good. I don’t post scores for these rounds because we’re playing Stepford and pick up on a double. It’s a pretty relaxed competition.

On rule 5: Is it legal to use an oxygen concentrator when blowing the ball in?

The idea that golf is so pure and that any deviation from the rules is an abomination is a joke. There are pros who have cheated, only some of which who have been caught. There are pros who have stretched the rules to just below the breaking point and have been patted on their backs for their cleverness rather than shamed for violating the "spirit" of the game.

Weekend golfers playing for little or no money should not feel the need to hold themselves to a set of rules made for tournaments that often slow down play and make an otherwise fun day miserable.

Who has never hit a perfect ball in the middle of a fairway only to find it stuck in a divot that should have been filled? Who has hit a ball, was certain they could find it, couldn't find it, and then walked up back to the tee to hit a second? I'm sure the number is very low and those few who did were given very dirty looks or worse from the foursome waiting at the tee box.

Yes, pace of play is very important. Little hacks to speed up play make the game more enjoyable. 99% of the guys I play with are ethical. Sometimes a guy loses count of strokes. Sometimes a putt is given when it shouldn’t but that’s not the putter’s fault.

I do play in a senior golf tour where the PGA rules are strictly followed. All putts must end in the hole. The only modification is three over par pick up for pace of play.

Do people really do that? Play without betting? Really?
