A 74-year-old man living in Akron, Ohio, told police he shot a teenager multiple times after he broke into his home last week.

The homeowner, who asked to be identified by his nickname of "Lurch," told FOX 8 Cleveland the home invasion happened around 7:30 in the morning March 29. He said he opened fire when the teen came crashing through his front glass door.

The hurt teen rolled down the steps to the basement, where he allegedly grabbed a shovel.

"I shot him again," Lurch said. He then kept an eye on the intruder until police arrived. "As far as I know, I hit him three times." The suspect is reportedly 16 years old.

“By the location and crime, I’m guessing it is indeed demographic.”

At 7:30 in the morning?

74-year-old Ohio man who sleeps near gun”

My impression is that the headline infers sleeping near a gun is odd or strange.

I am one strange guy.

Yep.

2 statements ONLY to dispatcher/police for any shooting:

“I was in fear for my life”

&

“I am now exercising my 5th Amendment rights.”

(the latter is REQUIRED)

When in doubt, don’t speak at all except to confirm identity.

I am fairly proficient with handguns, but if I ever have to shoot a home invader in the middle of the night it would be a lot easier using a shotgun.

My personal preference for home protection is a 12-gauge Remington Wingmaster 870 that my father gave me over 40 years ago. I also have a Mossberg Maverick 88, which is probably a better choice for home defense (it holds 8 rounds vs 5 for my Wingmaster), but I have been firing the Wingmaster most of my adult life and am very comfortable with it.

The age of the intruder is no more relevant than the age of the intended victim.

You breakdown someone’s door, you deserve getting shot.

Only a moron, i.e. a LibTurd, doesn’t assume that it a given that one’s life is being threatened under those circumstances.

After his unfortunate yakking the old guy better hope he doesn’t have an anti gun, anti freedom local presecutor. He can already expect a civil rights violation civil lawsuit by the assailant and his family. This sounds like an ambulance chaser’s wet dream.

I have a Remington pump my dad gave me and I had restored and the 3 shell plug limiter removed, and a coach side by side. Then for hunting guns I have a 30-06 Springfield, also restored to a sport stock and scope. An amazingly accurate rifle for large game. Then I have the tightest grouping gun ever. A 6mm Swedish Mauser, also restored with a sport stick and scope. It's one of those left eye or right eye on a groundhog at 100 yards kinda gun.

Home and personal defense is a matter not touched on with rifles, nor should be. One round of the Springfield could enter and exit the homes of two neighbors. That's why the shotgun is my go to.

Nope, he’s extremely fortunate he didn’t kill the perp. If he did and they were a member of the wrong group then regardless of the circumstances his life and maybe the life of his family may have been over.

According to Resident Brandon, if “you want to keep someone away from your house, just fire the shotgun through the door.”

Lemme guess! The perp needed to hold a shovel so that he could do some landscaping work???

Absolutely great advice. STFU until you talk to a lawyer, and that means, friends, family, your co-workers and your family pet.

Average means nothing in this instance.

Because an average is a compilation of ALL shootings, some of which will be .22’s, .380’s , .32’s, .38 specials, all the way up to 8mm, ,45’s, etc.

There will likely be more 9mm than anything else and that alone will distort the number of shots required.

In addition to caliber, to get the truth, one must know what load was used. Bullet construction is as important as weight, caliber and velocity.

For instance, the proper bullet in a 9mm will be more successful than the incorrect bullet in a .45.

The only way to determine the most effective self defense load is to take each and every shooting, determine the number of hits, WHERE the HITs entered the body and the result...dead, total collapse from broken bones, or only convinced it was time to give up.

Studies on defense against grizzly and black bears have been done that way on a very small scale, simply because compared to shot humans, there are very few.

That comparison makes it very clear that the bigger the ammo, the better the shooter’s chances.

Beginning with the .357 mag, one shot stopping the bear becomes more likely, although to my surprise the .357 barely makes it. The .45 Colt, 8 mm. .40, .44mag. .45 auto and from there on up have many one shot successes on record.

You can argue caliber all you want, no one goes grizzly hunting with a .25 or a .32. Even a .308 is considered an under powered rifle for grizzly.

Little bullets make little holes. Big heavy bullets not only make big holes, they break bones.

No it is the average by law enforcement shootings. .380 is 2.4 9mm 2.7. No law enforcement is using .22.

Three bullets hitting the threat on average to end the threat.

Sometimes it’s 1 bullet sometimes it’s 5 or more.

The fact that so many law enforcement people are carrying 9 mm makes my post valid even when you remove the smaller weapons.

If all cops carried .357’s or larger, the numbers would be different.

Now I don’t argue with people any more. That is the way it is. Take it or leave it.

Answer, am I under arrest? No, goodbye.
No, we just want to talk to you.
I want my lawyer.
If you would just co operate you could go.
Am I under arrest? No bye.
I want my lawyer.

> No, we just want to talk to you. <

That one is a classic. And it’s often followed by: “You’re not in any trouble, pal. We just want to clear a few things up. Then you’ll be on your way.”

Some poor slob takes those words at face value, and tries to help the cop. Next thing you know, he’s in the back of a police car on the way to the country jail.

So the police carry a 9mm and you should too is your response, lol. Maybe you should have read my tagline before trying to school me on bullet construction. I suspect the most commonly found round for 9mm is still FMJ and has been for many years. Every citizen is a perp to a cop as most have noted on here.
