Portland grocery chain Fred Meyers (Kroger subsidiary) plays loud classical music in its parking lot to deter illegal activities, including gangs, drug deals, and other crime. And it is working. But some neighbors complain it is "irritating and inhumane".

Fred Meyer released a statement saying the deterrent is effective. Portland Police refuse to pursue the noise complaints. Details in video.

May I suggest Beethoven's 9th Symphony, 4th Movement ("Ode an die Freude")? Always used to help me "sharpen up" for a little of the old "ultraviolence."

Welly, welly, welly, well my droog! I prefer a cup of moloko with Vellocet!"

Or Baby Sharks, but I dunno, I’m seeing gunfights between the produce aisles and the canned goods aisles on that one.

Portlanders didn’t just vote for it, they went out and marched for it.

1812 Overture works well.It will make the perps believe you have 12 Pound Napoleon Cannon on the premises.

A little obsolete as weapons go, but still devastatingly effective.

Nothing new. I remember store owners who played recorded classical music to keep the teens from piling up in his doorway, Fifty years ago.

Yeah, I was surprised they didn’t try lowering the volume before giving up on the idea. They could have had more speakers so their parking lot would be covered, but lower volume all around.

If he played Jazz instead, his parking lot would be full of Volvos. ZERO pick ups.

Notice the complainer, Paul’s, voice in the interview, is louder than the music in the background.

I think it was 7-11 who put ultrasonic emitters to keep the youths away.

CERTAINLY beats the “Call To Prayer” multiple times a day in blaring tones, which Minneapolis is allowing.

If that pic is from that demonic ‘clockwork’ movie, I remember seeing the preview at a theater, and later hearing about it; thinking of how I would have loved to stroll onto that movie set with a Louisville slugger. Kind of a Billy Jack response, I guess, to the glorification of violence and perversion.

Back in the 1990s, some mini-mart store, 7-11 I think, played classical music outside their store and put in yellow light bulbs outside to deter groups of teens from hanging out. The teens didn’t like the classical music and the girls didn’t like the way the yellow lights made them look.

I think I would go with Mongolian throat singing. Or to do it right a little throat singing mixed with rock.

My favorite college bar used to walk through the bar cranking an airhorn. People didn’t just leave... they ran out the door.
