1969 was riding a schwinn varsity cross country from Texas to Washington DC to Michigan and back to Texas averaging 134 miles per day ...... my junior year of high school .........
What was the motivation for an epic trip like that? Usually at that age those “swim the widest ocean, climb the highest mountain” efforts involved a girl... :)
My reminder to peruse and see if anything new in the DIY ebike world.

NOPE ..... I had just earned my Eagle Scout award my junior year and had worked my summer at Philmont Ranch in New Mexico and wanted to do something more difficult after my senior year of high school. After the bike ride I joined the USAF Explosive Ordnance Disposal. .......
I had one of those 34lb varsity tanks once.
Today I have way too many 531 super record bikes that no one wants cause the are not plastic or something.
I have a lot of vinyl records too.
That’s a great bike design. All it needs now is an electric motor to make it freeway legal for those times we have to hurry home to pee.
A surprisingly bicycle-friendly environment. The bulk of secondary roads have marked bike lanes. Many places have actual separate bike trails.
The only challenges are stray dogs and these unbelievable thorns that love to destroy inner tubes.
Wow!
Kudos to you!
The Varsity was Schwinn's entry level bicycle, whereas the Super Sport was a bit more refined!
I haven’t looked recently but not long ago vintage Campy parts were bringing high prices. Maybe the not so popular frames aren’t but try parting out a Super Record bike and I bet you’ll be happy.
Zwift.
No cars, dogs, flats, headwinds,or rain. My derm doesn’t give me grief about sun damage. The fridge and bathroom are twenty steps away.
I ride with friends and family from across the USA.
Zwift is not perfect, but it is better than riding the streets.
My son is moving home while looking for another job. My bike should be coming with him.
If you will be buying a new bike, DO NOT buy a bicycle that is called BicyStar. It is sold at Wal-Mart. Looks great for $250, however the Shimano derailleur is not.If you don’t look closely, you think it is a Shimano (same font). Typical Chinese crap..

Pretty much good advice to steer clear of any bike from Walmart. A local bike shop will generally have more knowledgeable salespeople and in some cases they have good quality 2nd hand bikes for sale that will be better builds than anything at Walmart.
A couple of years after Campy Ergo came out, I was in a club with a guy who rode a 531 Colnago with Super Record and (pre-indexing) downtube friction shifters. At the gathering before the start of one ride, I happened to be behind him and noticed his rear cluster looked awfully 'busy' so I counted. Ten cogs. So I (naively) asked him how he managed to run 10 speeds with shifters from the 6-speed era. And he answered, "Friction shifters don't know how many gears is back there."
I've lost touch with him but I'd wager that if he could find a (vintage) mid-length S-R rear derailleur, today he'd be running a 12-sp cluster on the same bike.
You're half right.
6x2 is enough for me.
I still have a colnago, a pinarello and a few others.
My favorite was a pogiagli, but like the dog I hit it was bent in half
Friend had a Schwinn Continental ..... is was a lot lighter. Was a fun trip ....
LOL ..... OLD BUT TOUGH !
