Lots of good dogs in shelters but also some knuckleheads. Read up on behavior. You will have limited time to observe shelter dogs. For a breed, I would recommend a lab or retriever. Don’t pick a dog for its color. Look at conformation and behavior. Avoid nervous or extremely hyper. Good luck!
I second the motion to find one that connects with you. Just look around.
Why limit your choices to a rescue?
Lots of good breeders have good pups to buy.
I’ve only has German shepherds or shepherd mixes since 1980. Best dogs in the world.
If you are interested in the breed, get one from a rescue dealing specifically with German shepherds. They will give you the plusses and minuses of the breed.
Corgi, if you can find one. Big dog bark in a compact size.
Congratulations...you just picked the most assertive, curious and least inhibited dog in the litter. If that's the personality type you want, great...most people don't want that for a companion dog.
Likewise, I would avoid the shy, timid, retreating ones. Look for those in the middle of the pack, and pick from there.
Sorry for your loss. Losing a dog in some ways is more painful than losing some of the people in your life.
I have a black lab mix from a rescue shelter. She could be lab/pit? She is the best dog I’ve ever owned. Labs are awesome and pits are people dogs.
Go to a dog pound and they will see you, and start getting excited to see you and wagging their tails. Adopt one of those. I can’t do it because I’ll take them all!
He said once: "Do you know why God made beagles so damned cute? So you won't F*****G kill them!"
I saw a video of people teaching a beagle puppy to howl, and I thought "Those poor, ignorant souls have no idea they are sowing the seeds of their own destruction!"
You cannot replace the dog you left. Might want to be open to a whole new experience.
I call her a West Virginia Shepard (as opposed to an Australian Shepard)
Golden Retriever
She is....Whoever trained her did an amazing job. She doesn’t beg, when we’re active she’s active, when we relax she relaxes...she’s simply pleasant.
Bump on border collie/pit. My son has one. A real sweetheart. Just be ready to throw a ball for hours on end. Lol.
I grew up with a Beagle, great family dog. I’ve now had three English Springer Spaniels, all rescues, all great in their own ways. You can’t just judge by the breed. Like people every dog is different. Different personalities, different experiences.
Belgium Shepherd Malinois rescues. One of the most intelligent , loyal , dynamic , breeds on earth . The best years of my life were spent in the company of Mals
Bull Dog/Shih-Tzu mix, aka Bull-Shih-Tzu.
Don’t get hung up on breeds.. just go to the pound and let the dog choose you.
I prefer Rottweilers, but anyone who rescues any dog is cool in my eyes. Regardless of whether you get a mutt or find a pure bred, just make sure you do your homework.
Hope you find the dog you want, and if finds the person it needs.
