Well, if it was staged, they read the room. Everyone likes to see a smart-assed comic get smacked. I’m still puttimg my money on Elon vs Vlad. PPV would recover the Russian economy.
Real.... there were too many other indicators for it to be otherwise.
Well, his wife is making of him a word that is far too misused on FR these days, but fits this situation.
They were just presenting the ‘Jesse Smollett’ award for the worst acting in a staged event.

The author is making fun of people who believe it was staged.
PS - It was staged.
In high school I was involved in forensics, One Act, the school plays, etc. One year my friend and I were given the Edward Albee play The Zoo Story.
Peter gets slapped around a bit in that story and I was Peter. As we acted it out the air slapping by Jerry that most people do seemed just too lame. Far too unrealistic, there was no life in the play. People werent engaged, it was just a play.
My friend didnt wasnt familiar with slap fighting, he wasnt a particularly physical sort. I showed him "the trick". I showed him how to cup his hand and taught him to keep his wrist loose so he could actually slap me as hard as he wanted. Any degree of pain experienced is actually on the slapper not the slapee when done correctly. By the time of our final performance he could deliver blows to my face that sounded like he was splitting flesh and I didnt really feel any of it.
That got people to pay attention, that drew them in to the "real" event going on in front of them. When we went to state that year the judges had already watched at least a dozen lame performances of "The Zoo Story" when it was our turn. I could see the judges and I think they nearly pissed themselves when he hauled off and started actually slapping me.
After performances people would comment that they couldnt believe that I endured that just for a play. I didnt endure anything, my friend "Jerry" did.
If you listen and dont watch youll note that there is no sting in the slap, its muffled. There is a still photo that the media is passing around this morning of Will pulling his hand away with Chris still in the cringe position and Wills hand is still partially cupped "the right way". It sounds and looks like Will caught the collar of the jacket, possibly intentionally, and delivered the type of slap that we used to do.

apparently it's good enough evidence for the FR crowd who insist this was staged.
2. The loud "bop" at the moment of contact sounded more like a sound effect, not the result of a slap.
Hard to hear clearly. Haven't heard many full-contact slaps between men to make a good judgement.
3. Chris Rock's IMMEDIATE reaction was not pain, shock, or concern, but a huge smile.
Goofy, embarrassed smile. Something a comedian knows how to pull off when he doesn't have anything else.
4. Actors are trained to pull punches, and to fake being hit by a pulled punch.
Not that it would be impossible, but Chris Rock is not an action-movie actor.
5. The struggling Oscars were in need of publicity, and this gave it to them, so much so that it will probably carry over until next year and beyond.
Can't argue with you there.
