Why Did Hunter Biden Have DOD Encryption Keys On His Laptop?
AND Magazine ^ | 27 Mar, 2022 | Sam Faddis

Posted on 03/29/2022 5:11:22 AM PDT by MtnClimber

The ongoing analysis of the hard drive of Hunter Biden’s laptop has revealed that there are multiple Department of Defense “encryption keys” on it. These keys allow access to DOD email accounts and databases. The exact number of these keys is still unknown. There may be dozens.

The keys are known more formally as “root encryption certificates." Some of them appear to have unusually long expiration dates with many lasting twenty years or more. Such keys should not be present on a personal laptop of any kind, and there is no known reason that Hunter Biden would be in possession of them at all.

The keys were discovered only recently by Jack Maxey’s technical team working in Switzerland. Shortly after the discovery of the keys Maxey contacted the U.S. Embassy in Switzerland and reported that he had information that might compromise American national security and would like to talk to someone in the Regional Security Office to report what he had learned. His contact information was taken by the person with whom he spoke, but no one has ever called back to obtain the information in his possession.

According to information provided to Maxey, DOD is now aware of the presence of the keys on the laptop’s hard drive, has determined that the keys were still active, and has taken steps to cancel them.

Am I mixing up my technologies? You need stored security certificates to gain and maintain secure sessions with secure resources, but even if you have them, you still need authentication. Just having the keys themselves to get you in, no?

If they’re RSA Public/Private keys, and if there is a private key stored on the laptop, then it’s all you need to access the server. No additional login required.

The $64,000 question would be who gave Hunter Biden a private key to access a DoD server.

Seems like the certificates would be for device side authentication...but why does he have them? Who gave them to him? This whole thing stinks and the lack of responsibility of their handling is criminal respective to national security.

There is a thread on FR about Hunter getting his daddy’s daily intel briefings , could this have anything to do with it?

Biden is the President, he was elected by appointed Electors, what happened in the “presidential election” (which is not in the Constitution) is irrelevant.

Somebody posted a coherent explanation a few days ago about how lots of government laptops have these keys installed but access still is need to know and requires special hardware and codes to get in.

Sounds plausible but I am disinclined to leave it at that. Knowing the government, one must ask whether the mere possession of such a laptop, even without the special hardware and codes, is unlawful?

Even if lawful, are there not liabilities for losing such a laptop as Hunter did when he left it and forgot about it at the repair shop? Reading between the lines of Jack Maxey's sweeping conclusions -repeat conclusions- I should not be surprised if the very texts themselves prove violation of secrecy laws by their contents.

I think it will be a lot harder to find an honest prosecutor than it will be to find crimes of the dishonest Hunter Biden.

1) No encryption key should have a life span that exceeds the review cycle by more than a factor of 2. If the encryption keys are reviewed annually, 2 years is the max lifespan according to best practice.

2) Encryption keys are classified information, generally at the same security level or higher of the systems that the key is built for. Most DOD keys are Secret or higher.

3) Possession of classified information without authorization is a felony.

18 USC 1924:
Whoever, being an officer, employee, contractor, or consultant of the United States, and, by virtue of his office, employment, position, or contract, becomes possessed of documents or materials containing classified information of the United States, knowingly removes such documents or materials without authority and with the intent to retain such documents or materials at an unauthorized location shall be fined under this title or imprisoned for not more than five years, or both.

The short answer is depends.

Basically comes down to what the key is used for. Some keys encrypt data at rest. Others = are used to encrypt sessions (data in motion). If the key is reused for both (poor practice) then you could access anything.

I know that is what we have accepted, but it just is not so. He is what happens when people push you to no way out.

It is self imposed no way out. Therefore America will be even more ruined in three years.

I will live with the lie, but I refuse to accept lies as fact nor will I convince myself that lies are the truth and shrug it off.

For everything legit about Hunter’s Laptop, this is BS.

He has DoD Root Certificates installed on his computer. Anybody can download and install the DoD Root Certificates on their machines.

Per: https://www.technocracy.news/defense-department-encryption-keys-found-on-hunter-bidens-laptop/

“Faddis explains that “the keys are known more formally as ‘root encryption certificates.’”

Instructions for installing these root certificates can be found here:

https://public.cyber.mil/pki-pke/end-users/getting-started/#toggle-id-1

So this is a non-story. The rest of the laptop data is fully legit. But this is a major reach...
