Republicans have spent weeks hammering President Joe Biden as too slow in responding to Russia’s brutal invasion of Ukraine.
Enter Rand Paul.
The idiosyncratic GOP senator is undermining his own party’s message by single-handedly delaying a revocation of normal trade relations with Russia, thereby slowing efforts to further incapacitate Russia’s economy. Paul is refusing to allow a quick vote on the bill absent a deal to narrow presidential power to enact sanctions — an ask that leaders in both parties have spurned.
And as he’s done many times, Paul is not budging under growing bipartisan pressure.
“Somebody ought to read the bills, don’t you think?” Paul said in a brief interview, dismissing his colleagues’ posture on Ukraine as saber-rattling. “Most of this is symbolic.”
In many ways it’s vintage Paul: Stake out an outlier position and stick with it, disregarding the ensuing barrage of internal criticism. The Kentuckian was the only Republican senator to leave his name off a recent statement opposing a new nuclear deal with Iran.
Then there was late last year, when he was the face of opposition to additional funding for Israel’s Iron Dome missile defense system just as his party was criticizing Biden and Democrats for not supporting Israel enough. He also rose to prominence with his “stand with Rand” filibuster against the nomination of John Brennan to be CIA director, and he single-handedly caused a brief government shutdown in 2018 over his demands for an amendment.

He is far sighted.
Most Americans are wondering where the GOP stands with respect to the Preseident, his son Hunter Biden and his laptop, and rumours about the Biden involvement in biowarfare and bioweaponry develpment in the Ukraine.
After that Putin’s decisions are pretty self-explanatory and don’t really need any other GOP “response”
Politico is pissed that Rand doesn’t play the GOP establishment game.
More like the neocon message.
Rand Paul, almost as nutty as Ron.
Supports nukes to Iran.
Denies Iron Dome to Israel.
Liberaltarians are no long part of the fabric on conservatism.
Rand’s not perfect (who among us is?), but he’s right more than wrong and he’s right here.
I notice you caught the two points in the article the Politico writers use to make Rand look like a nutjob but left off the third part about where he opposed the nomination of John Brenna as head of the CIA. Does your omission imply some sort of Libertarian support for Brennan’s nomination and subsequent installation as CIA Director? Seems to me he was dead on correct in that regard.
Brennan.
Rand and Thomas Massie, two of best we’ve got.
Rand Paul said he would support funding for the iron dome if it was offset by spending cuts as he said he’s supported the law that was passed - pay-go - so be careful in your trust for liberal Politico.
Rand is the lone voice of sanity opposing the Uni-party.
We are very close to a monarchical presidency and a for-show-only legislature.
Wait till you see what the Supreme Court morphs into.
Agreed!

Are there not ways to influence and effect change in a neighboring country other than destroying it and killing lots of people from both countries?
