After a severe fight the enemy was put in complete route, leaving behind two pieces of cannon, four caissons and a large number of small arms and about 300 prisoners. Our loss is 150 killed; 300 wounded. The enemy's loss is 500 killed and 1,000 wounded."
WASHINGTON, Wednesday, March 26.
The following dispatch was telegraphed to Gen. SHIELDS to-day:
WAR DEPARTMENT, Washington, March 26.
BRIG.-GEN. SHIELDS: Your two dispatches, relative to the brilliant achievement of the forces under your command, have been received. While rejoicing at the success of your gallant troops, deep commiseration and sympathy are felt for those who have been victims in the gallant and victorious contest with treason and rebellion. Your wounds, as well as your success, prove that LANDER's brave division is still bravely led, and that wherever its standard is displayed, rebels will be routed and pursued.
To you, and the officers and soldiers under your command, the Department returns thanks.
(Signed,) EDWIN M. STANTON,
Secretary of War.
WINCHESTER, Tuesday, March 25.
The details of last Sunday's fight have been received. Capt. SHRIBER, Aid and Inspector-General of SHIELDS' Division, while riding to Crest Hill, to the left of Stone Ledge, with two orderlies, was confronted by fire rebel cavalry, who empted their revolvers, killing the two orderlies. Capt. SHRIBER charged them, running one through to the hilt of his sword, and received a ball through his cap, but was unharmed.
