It took a couple of million Russian dead from WWI (as of 1917) for the last of the Romanovs to lose his grip on power.
If these reports are true, now is the time to cut a deal for both sides. Otherwise Putin might just decide to kick over the chess board.

Actually, he is doing exactly this.
I expected him originally to just attack in Donbass, take over the part of it controlled by Ukraine and force Ukraine to accept annexation of Crimea and Donbass to Russia.
Ukrainians do not particularly care about Donbass, inhabited mostly by Russians.
Obviously, they decided - why not take over the whole Ukraine? Piece of cake!
Now, It seems they decided that Ukraine is lost, so maybe just grab Donbass and force the annexation of Crimea and Donbass?!
Unfortunately for Putin, now, this may now work. It may be too late. Ukraine suffered a lot, they are not to just give up and cede territory to Russia.
Putin will have Jobama come to his rescue and Jobama will oblige him, all behind the scenes of course. It goes without saying that Putin and Xi own the puke criminal Jobama and have him by the gonads. Bad for the rest of us and we’ll very likely see just how bad before the next election.
He’s been losing for 2 weeks.
He will look for some way to save face. Taking the Donbas and giving up the war is the only way out for him.
