Is Ohio really the best state for pizza?
According to a new ranking from loan cal Anytime Estimate, Is Ohio really the best state for pizza?
According to a new ranking from loan cal Anytime Estimate, Cleveland, Columbus and Cincinnati all rank in the top 20 pizza cities in the U.S.
The list, which scored the 50 largest metros in the country, was based on the following criteria:
Google Trends interest in 20 pizza variations. Pizza restaurants per 100,000 residents. Pizza restaurants per square mile. Google Trends interest in general pizza terms. Independent pizza restaurants per 100,000 residents. Average price and affordability of cheese pizza. Average price and affordability of pepperoni pizza. Big chain pizza restaurants per 100,000 residents. ADVERTISEMENT
Our media partners say that based on those factors, Anytime Estimated ranked Detroit first overall, with the most independent pizza restaurants per capita and number one in “pizza passion,” or local Google searches for an extra-large variety of pizza sizes.
Ohio was ranked the best over state for pizza, with Cleveland coming in second, Columbus ranking third and Cincinnati ranking 19th overall.
According to the list, Cincinnati’s average cheese pizza price was $7.02, the annual cost of weekly pizza was $365.04, and the percentage of annual income spent on pizza was 0.61%.
The city also has 9.8 pizza restaurants per 100,000 residents, 3.7 independent pizza restaurants per 100,000 residents, a “pizza passion” score of 81.3 and the average number of miles to the nearest pizza 2.53.
Surprisingly, noted pizza cities New York City and Chicago did not crack the top 10 list, ranking 22nd and 14th, respectively. Cleveland, Columbus and Cincinnati all rank in the top 20 pizza cities in the U.S.

You just enjoy starting fights here, don’t you?
NYC pizza today, tomorrow, forever.
Stupid best lists. There are good and bad Pizza places in every State.
I like Ohio pizza, eating some pepperoni/sausage and some Briar Hill now :P
The survey had nothing to do about best tasting pizza.

Pizza rankings are not even on the radar.
Any list or rankings will depend on the criteria used. How significant is it to us, how many pizza places there are per capita, in a state?
How many mob rubouts in Ohio in the past 50 years? Enough said.
yuppers
In NY, if you put pepperoni on your pizza, they know you’re not local, as anything on the pizza past the basic ingredients is considered an insult.
LOL!
I say it is hard to beat Atlanta for pizza, believe it or not. This started about a dozen years ago with a place called Antica Pizza Napoletana, but now there are literally dozens of quality Napoletana-style places. Additionally, Atlanta is the home of the Mellow Mushroom chain, so there’s that as well, plenty of those around. And if you insist on NY style, those places are around as well.
Detroit area number One - has my vote.
Variety.
Mom and Pop shops...
Now I’m hungry for a Mickey’s Pizza..
Bananas on pizza
Um
Nope
I don’t think so
None of their “so called” evaluation criteria involve real things about pizza. Who cares about google trends (or google itself for that matter). Price? Affordability? #Restaurants per 100,000 residents? None of these things matter in the slightest. Completely worthless study.
If they wanted to evaluate which cities have the best pizza, they might be concerned with TASTE. Or things like:
Crispiness of the crust?
Tanginess of the sauce?
Quality of the cheese?
Overall blend and taste of the ingredients together?
None of the nonsense they “evaluated” matter in the slightest.
