The U.S. Senate apparently likes daylight saving time so much that it wants to make it permanent. Legislators unanimously voted to approve the Sunshine Protection Act on March 15, 2022, which would establish daylight saving time as the default all year round for the states that observe it — meaning darker mornings and brighter evenings in winter.
The bill must be passed by the House of Representatives and then signed by the President before it can come into effect. But if it does, Americans will no longer have to change their clocks twice every year starting from 2023.
"The public safety improvements, economic benefits, and the wellbeing of the American people are all excellent and credible reasons to embrace year-long Daylight Saving Time," said Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith. "I believe the Sunshine Protection Act would give us an immediate and long-term boost after a terrible pandemic year and a very dark winter."
Time zones will remain in place and unaffected, and states or territories which don't already observe daylight saving time won't be forced to do so.

Standard time rocks. Especially for those of us in bed by 5:30. But seriously is there evidence for any of these benefits, outside of working the fields as early/late as possible or other outdoor work which was the original intent ? I know it doesn’t even save energy.
I'd rather have the dark in the evening than so late in the morning.
I believe we should be on Standard Time permanently.
Sleep experts say Senate has it wrong: Standard time, not daylight saving, should be permanent
“Standard time, for so many scientific and circadian rationales and public health safety reasons, should really be what the permanent time is set to.”

I dont care what they do as long as they stop changing the damn time twice a year!
Just make school hours 10 am to 4 pm
That way, they get daylight all year round unless they happen to be up in the polar circle.
Such important issues Congress is focused on. They deserve another 21% raise.
iF the government makes Daylight savings time permanent it will become standard time and in a couple years everyone will adapt and no one will notice.
Beyond Stupid...
I prefer lighter in the evenings. When I get home from work, there is still enough light to do something outside.
The winter months are so bloody depressing its not funny. I wake up before the sun comes up anyway.
Instead of this new law, why not simply make everyone get out of bed ONE HOUR EARLIER, and start work ONE HOUR EARLIER.
Of course, everyone could leave work ONE HOUR EARLIER and go to bed ONE HOUR EARLIER.
Call it the HOUR EARLIER PROTECTION ACT.
Schools can’t be 10 to 4 as parents with typical one hour commutes need to be in an office (at least some days of the week) at 8 am. Also after school sports practice needs some daylight….
Agreed. I would rather it get dark earlier in the evening in the winter than have to get up in the dark.
I’m surprise they didn’t want to spend a few trillion dollars to investigate if they could turn off and turn on the sun when they wanted. Personally, I don’t like changing between times. There is still the same amount of daylight each day.
Years ago, maybe during the gas crises of the 1970’s, they kept Daylight Savings Time through the winter.
As I remember, it did not go well. It was really dark for a longer hour as the kids waited for school buses, and not as safe for them to be so waiting.
A bunch of elitists who like longer summer days are not thinking through these ideas.
Keep the switch....DST in the summer, standard time in the winter. It’s not that much of a hassle. We are spoiled.
Sunrise/sunset in Boston is already 50 minutes earlier than it is in Detroit because they are in the same time zone. 20 minutes wouldn't be a big deal, but nearly a full hour is kind of stupid.
who goes to school anymore?
My neighborhood is chock full of kids outside during school hours, even before spring break.
Break from what i don’t know.
I like daylight savings time. Living in the Pac NW, that extra hour of daylight after work really is a mood lifter. I don’t see children walking to school anymore. Either the parents drive them to school or they take the school bus with a parent staying with them while they wait for the bus.
Parenting has changed from when I was a child.
Wouldn't it be better to adjust business hours to suit?
Just set the clocks as originally specified for navigation, and then adjust business hours to suit. Something for everyone as well as correct.
The analogy has been used before, about cutting off a foot of length from the bottom of the blanket, and sewing it onto the top. The blanket is no greater in length, and there is an unsightly seam across the width of the blanket.
The sun still follows its course, where traditionally at its highest theoretical point in the sky, at the zenith, this has been called “noon” or “midday”. Twenty-four hours later, the sun is once again at the highest point in the sky, and again it is “noon”. No piece of legislation, ever, will change that.
By common agreement, the world has been divided into twenty-four time zones, running roughly along the longitudes some fifteen degrees apart. For convenience of local areas, some variations in these lines are permitted, but there are still peculiarities where a state may end up with two or more time zones, as the lines of the time zones converge the further north one travels. The time for the entire zone, from south to north, is set at some theoretical point in the middle of the zone, and is in a full hour’s increment when passing from zone to zone. That part is subject to legislation, and is for the convenience of scheduling arrivals and departures.
But just arbitrarily lopping one hour at the beginning of the day and tacking it on the other end, is an exercise in both sophistry and futility. Thee are still only twenty-four hours in a day.
I can imagine there were idiots staying up to 2 AM to change their clocks “on time.”
= = =
In the spring, turn it ahead to 3 AM.
But in the fall, at 2AM turn it back to 1AM, then repeat at 2AM, . . . ???
I can see the Democrats’ problem.
