I would be against attacking Mexico for stationing Chinese (or Russian) bases and weapons, particularly nuclear.

I would DEMAND that the US tolerate the buildup on our border and NOT DO ANYTHING until we were physically attacked or invaded.

I make that demand because I am an idealist and it is NEVER justified to be the first side to use force against a neighboring country. NEVER!!!!

Depending on how you interpret events, the Monroe Doctrine died Oct 1962. Khrushchev traded his Cuban missiles for our missiles close to the USSR. Cuban sovereignty as a communist nation was guaranteed from US interference. Nikita is portrayed as the one who blinked, but he achieved his objectives.

If Russia wasn’t led by a recalcitrant Soviet dictator I’d care. Until Russia stops being a threat to its neighbors it needs to be contained or defeated.

Let’s be frank. The U.S would do whatever it pleased if it felt threatened by Cuba or anyone else for that matter. Whether the threat is fictitious or overstated or real.

So, you are implying that the U.S. does not face the same, or worse, that Russia?

Has Russia been invaded by 45-50 million foreign invaders during the past 40-years?

Has Russia been politically dominated by racist blacks and woke/perverted white people in the last 40-years?

IMHO, this article is bereft of reality...

Mexico, Cuba and Canada are not particularly favorable to the US.

But we don’t invade and take them over.

And yes Russia took over Cuba by way of Castro. It still belongs to Russia.

Well, I don’t think we would reasonably expect to be able to shell civilian homes, kindergartens, schools, farms, old folks homes, evacuees, bakeries, breweries, hospitals, etc in indiscriminate shelling using a variety of missiles and munitions without receiving international condemnation. I mean, can you imagine? Trump sent economic migrants back and do you remember all the threats and caterwauling from the international community?!

I’ve brought this up before. EVERY major power is extremely touchy and often overbearing about its immediate neighborhood. That is true of the US no less than of any other major power. Hell, the US basically declared the entire Western Hemisphere off limits to anybody else. Put in that light, its understandable that Russia is so touchy about Ukraine. We would never allow a rival power block to station forces right next to our border either. Look no further than the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Excellent post, detailing an argument I've been making on FR for the past month.

The Monroe Doctrine has been enforced by US presidents since 1823 to keep foreign military alliances from meddling anywhere in our entire hemisphere, and has been the pretext for invading many our our neighbors.

The Monroeski Doktrine is now being enforced by Russia's president to keep a hostile military alliance away from Russia's exposed southern border -- only 300 miles from Moscow.

But it's not wrong when WE do it!
