In 1823, when the emperor of Tzarist Russia invited the United States to negotiate a resolution of contested coastal lands along the northwest of the North American continent, President James Monroe responded with a proclamation in an address to Congress that would forever-after be called the Monroe Doctrine. In his own words, he said that when "the rights and interests of the United States are involved … the American continents … are henceforth not to be considered as subjects for future colonization by any European powers. … We owe it, therefore, to candor and to the amicable relations existing between the United States and those powers to declare that we should consider any attempt on their part to extend their system to any portion of this hemisphere as dangerous to our peace and safety."
Our official government summary of the Monroe Doctrine adds that "the doctrine warns European nations that the United States would not tolerate further colonization or puppet monarchs. … [emphasis mine]
"[I]n 1904, European creditors of a number of Latin American countries threatened armed intervention to collect debts. President Theodore Roosevelt promptly proclaimed the right of the United States to exercise an 'international police power' to curb such 'chronic wrongdoing,' in his so-called Roosevelt Corollary (or extension) to the Monroe Doctrine…

Let’s be frank. The U.S would do whatever it pleased if it felt threatened by Cuba or anyone else for that matter. Whether the threat is fictitious or overstated or real.
Yeah war is wrong. But when the other side is well.. stupid. War is the answer.
Ned Price of the Dept of State disagrees with you. When asked about possible Russian deployment to Cuba or Venezuela, he said it was unacceptable and that all measures are going to be taken to stop it.
“Ned Price of the Dept of State disagrees with you. When asked about possible Russian deployment to Cuba or Venezuela, he said it was unacceptable and that all measures are going to be taken to stop it.”
Well then he hasn’t seen the light of idealism, Norse.
Yep, but at the same time they say that the zones of influence are over, and Ukraine has a right to choose alliances:)
So, you are implying that the U.S. does not face the same, or worse, that Russia?
Has Russia been invaded by 45-50 million foreign invaders during the past 40-years?
Has Russia been politically dominated by racist blacks and woke/perverted white people in the last 40-years?
IMHO, this article is bereft of reality...
???
“Well, a man has got to know his limits”…H Callahan.
Mexico, Cuba and Canada are not particularly favorable to the US.
But we don’t invade and take them over.
And yes Russia took over Cuba by way of Castro. It still belongs to Russia.
There are no US troops “massing against” Mexico. And Mexico is at peace with its largest trading partner, the US.
Mexico’s border with the US has been essentially stable since the end of the US/Mexico war, except for a couple remnant areas which were resolved over the next 50–70 years. The last of these, the Chamizal, was a debated subject of discussion for some time, and it eventually in 1963 ended up being agreed to be given… to Mexico, reaffirming an understanding from 1911. In this entire time, neither Mexico nor the US militarized the area. This is a big difference.
Mexico already buys Russian weapons without any complaints from the US
for over a century now, the US has prioritized good relations with its neighbors. If the US were constantly trying to annex territory from Mexico and Canada the way Russia is trying to do with Ukraine, and Georgia and China is trying to do with Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, the Philippines, Vietnam, and India (did I forget any?) then our rivals would be able to take advantage of that.
Mexico has not been at war with the US for long time, and there is no reason to fear an invasion. The Baltics have been annexed by the USSR for no good reason in 1939, occupied for 50+ years, and more recently threatened militarily. They have legitimate reasons to request protection elsewhere. On the other hand, they are not basing offensive foreign weapons on their territory. And Ukrainia is threatened by Putin.
Glad things NEVER change. Glad countries never interfere with other countries and install hostile governments. Very glad.
Mexico started that war.
Well, what alternative method do you propose that the Ukrainians employ to push the Russians out of their country?
Maybe a sternly-worded letter to the Times?
Regards,
Evil, just evil.
You're not giving us much to go on here with such laconic responses.
What are you trying to say?
If war is "evil," then what other method should the Ukraine employ to oust the Russians from the Ukraine?
And what should other powers who denounce evil do to support them (the Ukrainians) in their noble endeavor to rid themselves of these invaders?
Regards,
Well, I don’t think we would reasonably expect to be able to shell civilian homes, kindergartens, schools, farms, old folks homes, evacuees, bakeries, breweries, hospitals, etc in indiscriminate shelling using a variety of missiles and munitions without receiving international condemnation. I mean, can you imagine? Trump sent economic migrants back and do you remember all the threats and caterwauling from the international community?!
Correct!
Sadly, the forces of good are held to a stricter standard than the forces of evil.
Regards,
“I am an idealist, war is ALWAYS WRONG.”
Personal self-defense too?
We should not be involved in any of this crap to begin with... let them sort it out.
Mexico is part of China’s Silk Road thing though. Belt and Road Initiative.
I’ve brought this up before. EVERY major power is extremely touchy and often overbearing about its immediate neighborhood. That is true of the US no less than of any other major power. Hell, the US basically declared the entire Western Hemisphere off limits to anybody else. Put in that light, its understandable that Russia is so touchy about Ukraine. We would never allow a rival power block to station forces right next to our border either. Look no further than the Cuban Missile Crisis.
