ideo showing the true size of Russia compared to Africa has gone viral on TikTok as social media users learn about the misrepresentation of scale on many world maps.
First posted in late February, the video had gained around 8.5 million views as of March 14 with just under 400,000 likes.
In the video, footage of an interactive map shows an outline of Russia, which at first appears to dominate a huge section of the map. However, as the outline is dragged down towards the continent of Africa and the equator, Russia begins to shrink. By the time the outline of Russia is placed on the equator, it is significantly smaller than it appeared at first and is dwarfed by the continent of Africa.

Excellent point to the (deliberate) misuse of the term “misrepresentation” (of scale) in the “news” report.
That’s crazy, wonder how the USA would look? Looks like we would be even smaller in that projection.
I live 3 blocks north of the 45th.
The Mapparium still shows Africa under colonial rule (so pre-1960) and shows Tibet and Manchuria as distinct from China. It also has Tannu Tuva as an independent country (later annexed by the Soviet Union).
They have the same penchant for corruption and dictatorships. Might as well.

That’s not the point when comparing the size of different land masses. In land mass, Canada is a very large country. So are China, Russia and the USA. Australia happens to encompass an entire continent, but it has a land mass of 2,941,300 sq mi. By land mass, Brazil (#5) is larger than Australia (#6).

Notice the Afro-Centric (Sahara, Muslim-ruled regions) “Let’s all pile on Russia because the mass media is jumping on Russia this week.”

Thank you for posting. The original image was the Mercator projection. Without verifying this image it is likely the Robinson projection. National Geographic adopted the Robinson projection around 1990.

I only knew about it because my brother-in-law did film production for the Christian Scientists, and knew all about it, so everyone in his family knew of it.
LOL, he would sometimes mutter with a grin “Mary Baker Eddy! Mary Baker Eddy!” like it was a prayer mantra! (He wasn’t a Christian Scientist, but got enjoyment out of poking them a bit...)
