True-Scale Map Comparing Russia to Africa Blows People's Minds
MSN ^ | Mar 14, 2022 | Ed Browne

ideo showing the true size of Russia compared to Africa has gone viral on TikTok as social media users learn about the misrepresentation of scale on many world maps.

First posted in late February, the video had gained around 8.5 million views as of March 14 with just under 400,000 likes.

In the video, footage of an interactive map shows an outline of Russia, which at first appears to dominate a huge section of the map. However, as the outline is dragged down towards the continent of Africa and the equator, Russia begins to shrink. By the time the outline of Russia is placed on the equator, it is significantly smaller than it appeared at first and is dwarfed by the continent of Africa.

Only people who would be surprised by this are people who have never seen a globe.

I can personally attest to that. I lived near the equator 60 years ago and I was much skinnier.

I am from Boston, and I have walked by that place several times when I was younger. My work is right down the street. I dunno, maybe I will check it out, especially as I have long been fascinated by maps.

Maybe I will.

Ah, I see you are geographically impaired. New Zealand and the Solomons are not part of the Australian Continent. New Guinea can be argued either way, but I wonder why you include PNG and not the portion of Indonesia on the island.

It’s all about projection systems. Most people, except those in the business, and even many in the business, don’t have a clue.

LOL, I have nothing against Christian Scientists...I don’t know much about them, and I suspect they wouldn’t even raise an eyebrow if I met one at random and engaged in conversation.

My brother-in-law viewed them as cultish, but I always suspected that was his personality that poked fun at them, not that they were any different on the surface. He was a bit of a “button pusher”...

preaching to the choir, I went from industry to teaching HS for 2 years. When I asked the math teachers why HS seniors could not read a ruler marker in 32nds on one side and decimal on the other, and had no idea how to figure which decimal marking was closest to oh say, 7/32, or why every student knew about Hiroshima, but none knew about Nanking or the Bataan Death March. Blank stares back, not real popular with the new style teachers. Although the head English teacher asked me my favorite book my response, Siddhartha, as it was about life. She hadn’t read it, so she did. She said it made her cry. And that’s what good literature should do, grab you. Not instruct you in groupthink.

If you are going by Tectonic Plates rather than contenintal land masses, then you should add India and Sri Lanka to your list of “Australian” countries. But if you look at a submarine map, it’s clear that only the countries on New Guenia can make a colorable claim.

But.......

The population of the Indonesian island of Java exceeds the population of all that is Russia. Russia has a smaller domestic product than Canada and barely exceeds Australia.
