(UK) Don't be a fuel! Tesco customer is spotted filling his petrol tank with COOKING OIL as petrol prices soar

Footage shows the man taking tops off trolley-load of cooking oil behind his car He then proceeds to fill up his car's fuel tank in front of bemused onlookers The customer was filmed outside a Tesco superstore in Congleton, Cheshire Comes as petrol prices have continued to soar - with some stations charging as much as £2/litre

This is the bizarre moment a man was spotted refueling his car with a trolley full of cooking oil as drivers struggle with the cost of filling up.

With petrol prices hitting record highs, a customer was filmed outside a Tesco superstore in Congleton, Cheshire, on Tuesday afternoon.

In the video he can be seen at the rear of his car with a trolley-load of vegetable oil bottles that he starts to open.

One by one he then pours the oil into his vehicle as bemused onlookers watch him.

Mark Rainford, who recorded the clip, said: 'I filmed it and as I walked past him he was taking all the tops off the bottles first, that's what made me laugh. He had clearly thought it through.'

While some viewers praised the man for his ingenuity, using cooking oils as a replacement for fuel can prove extremely risky and can cause lasting damage to engines.

One man on social media said: 'It's going to be a busy night for the AA when everyone tries this in their modern diesel engines.'

Another critic said: 'Don't go putting veg oil in your car or van unless it's old type diesel engine.

'You'll f*** your engine up, it's too thick and you'll blow the diesel pump up. And especially don't put it in a petrol car/van.'

Seems that Citroen made a lot of very fine diesel automobiles before year 2000 that will run on veg oil. UK bought a lot of them. Though comments say that 50% legitimate diesel fuel must be added in the winter. The veg oil gets too thick.

BTDT. It works with mechanical diesels. Not sure about the EPAed diesels.

In 2008, I knew two guys who had Mercedes diesels that would go around to fast food places and collect their old frying oil. Filter out the french fry crumbs and they were good to go. And yes, the exhaust did smell fast foody.

A friend runs his older Dodge Cummins on used cooking oil. He runs it through a two stage filtering process with the last stage being a centrifugal filter.

In the winter the oil tank is heated by hot water from the engine.

He’s driven from WV to FL and back on cooking oil.

My little brother did that as well!!! He had a diesel Mercedes and it smelled like french fries when he switched from gas- also, it was so quiet it sounded like the car had been turned off but it was still running.

Actually, that’s a FAR SAFER application for cooking oil than using it with food.

Rudy, the guy that invented the diesel and named it after himself, ran the original on Peanut Oil.

There's a restaurant owner in Denver who ran her old Mercedes on cooking oil from her kitchen for about 20 years. The Mercury Cafe.

There’s a guy here in town who’s old car (a 1934 something or other) runs on red wine.
