The first large-scale trial to test the long-term effects of a cocoa flavanol supplement to prevent cardiovascular disease offers promising signals that cocoa flavanols could have protective cardiovascular effects.
While neither supplement significantly reduced the primary outcome of total cardiovascular events, people randomized to receive the cocoa flavanol supplement had a 27% lower rate of cardiovascular death, a pre-specified secondary endpoint.
More than 21,000 participants were randomized to take daily capsules that contained 500 mg cocoa flavanols (donated by Mars Edge), a multivitamin tablet (donated by GSK Consumer Healthcare), neither or both.
The study found that cocoa flavanols reduced total cardiovascular events by 10%, but this was not statistically significant. First, those receiving the cocoa flavanol supplement had a significant 27% reduction in death from cardiovascular disease. Second, when the study team took adherence to study pills into account (by looking at those taking their study pills regularly), the team saw a stronger, 15% reduction in total cardiovascular events and a 39% reduction in death from cardiovascular disease. Third, a composite endpoint of major cardiovascular events (heart attacks, strokes, and cardiovascular deaths), although not a trial focus, was also significantly reduced.
A daily multivitamin had no significant effect on total or individual cardiovascular events. There were no safety concerns for either cocoa flavanols or a multivitamin.
COSMOS concluded after about 3.6 years, which was likely too short to detect whether the supplements could have affected cancer risk. Although a daily multivitamin improved levels of several nutritional biomarkers, it had no significant effect on total invasive cancer, the primary outcome for the multivitamin analyses. Cocoa flavanols also had no significant effect on total invasive cancer. The investigators and collaborators are also leveraging COSMOS to study cognitive decline, falls, eye disease, and other aging-related outcomes that may be influenced by the supplements.

You can get Cocovia on occasional sales for around 30% off.
Any supplement providing 500 mg of cocoa flavanols a day should provide the same benefit.
How many pounds of sugar free chocolate can I eat to get that dosage?
Why not just eat a little chocolate with over 70% cocoa everyday?
So this is chocolate without the sugar, milk, and fats?
How about we try taking out sugar, grains and anything artificial out of diets. How about we throw out Veganism and other dumb fad diets which work against our genetics. How about we try getting off the couch and stop watching Netflix 5 hours every night. How about we stop taking advice from idiots and government bureaucrats pushing big pharma poisons like Lipitor. How about we stop buying the lie of needing to feed 3 times a day and graze in between. How about we stop with the dumb fat acceptance nonsense. If you have a BMI over 30, eat and inflammatory diet of carbs, grains, factory farmed meat, artificial sweeteners, sugar and junk, don’t get your heart rate up and resistance train 3-5 times a week and lastly do things like retire at 65 to sit on the couch, you can with 85% certainty, not reach your 78th birthday, cancer or heart disease will get you...period. If are the other 15% you can be expected to and a burden on your savings account and your kids eventually.
It also says a 1/2 (40 grams) bar of Lily's Dark Chocolate - Original - Stevia Sweetened 55% Cocoa has 136 mg of flavanols.
I get my flavanols, the old fashioned way via good dark chocolate 2x/day.
I’m 83 and heading to being 84.
Cocoavia and this other item in the study have no milk, sugars, or fats.
Cocoavia tastes good and blends well in water.
So 2 bars of Lily’s, or 1/2 bar of Montezuma’s.
Thanks, but are their any adverse effects of consuming 5000 mg of cocoa flavanoids?
I went gluten free (which is VERY EASY - DO NOT buy any ‘gluten free’ products they taste like sh*t - except for some cheese snacks)
Cutting out all wheat made a WORLD of difference. My joints stopped hurting, I no longer have severe heartburn, and my stomach deflated like a balloon.
Then I kind of evolved into a paleo/keto/Mediterranean diet. I lost a good 30 pounds and feel so much better.
If you don’t want to memorize all the rules, just stick to MEAT and VEGGIES for a month.
See if it works for you.
You mean from “500 mg?”
Not that I’ve run across. However, if you shouldn’t have chocolate, you probably need to stay away from the supplement, too.
Thanks, that is what I was asking for.
Who said I shouldn’t have chocolate? Why take a supplement if you can have the real thing.
I put raw cacao powder in my shakes. Same benefit?
How about you run for office?. Got my vote.
Unfortunately, hypertasters like me can’t tolerate dark chocolate. But thanks for the article and I will look into the supplements.
Very cool! I include 75% dark in my treats regularly- I’ll study about this more.
Sorry, I was reading your post but I got hungry about halfway through so I went to put a batch of Pizza Rolls into the toaster oven.
I’ll finish reading your post after I eat.
Thanks!
About nine months ago, I read about CocoaVia’s effect on cognition (here on FR) and gave it a try. I don’t think I’ve noticed any improvements. Mars markets two varieties of CocoaVia — Cardio Health (500 mg) capsules and Memory+ (750 mg) capsules. They recommend three Memory+ capsules per day which I think is 750 mg Cocoa Flavanols per day (but the web site FAQ suggests it is 750 mg per CAPSULE). They need to make their information more self-consistent and accurate.
The stuff is very expensive, about $500 per year!
