Cleaning up our father's estate we found a wax paper umbrella he brought back from his time in China and Japan in the months following the surrender. There is some writing on it which I assume is Chinese but am not certain. He spent some shore time in Shanghai and in Sasebo Japan in Oct-Nov, 1945.
Can anyone here translate what this writing means?

When my wife comes home from work I’ll have her look at it. She is Chinese.

I did copy the picture you provided ,and have sent that picture to a friend who speak fluent Mandarin Chinese, and I think he can also read it too. I’ll let you know when I know. Matter of fact, he lives in Maryland also, Potomac Md., in Montgomery County.

It’s an ancient Confucian analect: “Man who pushes piano down mineshaft get tone of A flat miner.”

The mostly out-of-work Samurai in the movie Hari-Kiri (the original) was making umbrellas like that to get by.

The photo is of the outside of the umbrella which I would think is where the text is meant to be read. I think...

I’ll have my wife translate it. Now I am dying of curiosity to know what the phrase is.

She can’t understand several of the words - even though she speaks Shanghainese and Mandarin. It is Chinese Traditional.

It’s Greek to me, but considering it was being sold to tourists, the writing may be something mundane and benign.
Something like days of the week or months in the year.
They know Americans like to see what we consider ‘exotic’ script.
