A dentist broke his patients' teeth on purpose so he could fix them. Prosecutors say he made millions.

Scott Charmoli's patients' teeth were just fine, but fine wasn't making him enough money.

So the dentist in Jackson, Wis., drilled into and broke his patients' teeth in order to charge them for fixing the damage he'd caused, according to federal prosecutors. By doing so, Charmoli went from pulling in $1.4 million and affixing 434 crowns in 2014 to raking in $2.5 million and performing more than 1,000 crown procedures a year later.

Why did he sell his practice in 2019?

I have found an “if it’s not broke, don’t fix it” dentist. He charges high prices, does a good job, and takes a very conservative approach.

He told me one of his patients moved to another area, went to the dentist, and was told he needed $20K in work. He told that patient to find another dentist.

My last crown was $1300. I visit a regular dentist and then an oral surgeon on four-month rotation. Had to do that a few years for gum issues. Saw the oral surgeon the other day and he suggested I get my molar crown REPLACED because it was trapping food. I said “no thanks...I’ll floss more. Oh and, let’s go to a 6 month rotation.”.

What’s the difference between them and dirt-bag contractors?

I’ve always wanted a full shoulder mount of a dentist on the wall in my den.

My dentist is wonderful. He never overcharges, and does excellent work that lasts. He came to the U.S. as a 9 year old refugee from Vietnam about 40 years ago. His parents gave him and his siblings a choice -— they could become doctors, dentists, or engineers. All nine of them became one of the three, all on full academic scholarships.

That’s what dentists do, imo.

I am currently seeing a dentist who is crown happy.

I have a number of crowns and the dentist I was seeing for a few years said they were being ground down and needed to be replaced.

She also wanted to a complete upper and lower realignment which would have started with a gel casting that itself was going to cost just over $500.

That was it, I stopped seeing her as did the rest of the family after she talked my brother-in-law into getting a dental implant that ultimately he didn't need.

My new dentist said there was nothing wrong with my crowns.......

When I was little, I had 8 fillings in one day. Two in each back tooth in the same exact places. The assistant whispered to me I didn’t have any cavities when the dentist was out of the room. I told my mom but she didn’t believe me.

I’ve never found a dentist who wasn’t doom and gloom and $$$$$. Always came out worse than I went in.

Won’t work. They’ll be partnered with dentists on the sly and get kickbacks for their referals.

The guy I have now is great. He once found some decay (in a pocket caused by braces when I was a teen - there’s another story) but he held off on filling it for several years opting for a wait and see approach. When he did fill it it was a very small filling. Practices and attitudes have changed quite a bit in recent decades.

I had the same experience. Every time I went to the dentist 3 cavities. Mu molars were all drilled and filled.

Went off to college and all that stopped. Have not had a cavity in 50 years. I have had some of those fillings I got when younger fail, but no new cavities. I do have one that has come out 3 times, and they are now recommending a root canal, but I am just keeping it clean and watching it (going on 5 years, now).

A bunch of drill happy hacks, I wish there was some recourse.

They are still using antiquated practices. My last one (last until I look like a hillbilly) got his jollies and retirement funds by scaling and planing every 3 months. I’d be in awful pain for a couple months with giant rips in my gums exposing the roots which would get infected. He would never do anything about the infections. Finally, the infections would clear up about the time for the next appointment. Rinse and repeat.

My family quit him but I was too stupid to tell him where to get off. When I told him to do min. care and only every 6 months, he revved up the damage. Lost two perfectly good teeth to him. Another is broken due to a filling by him.

I went to the dentist for the first time in thirty years to remove a wisdom tooth and my mouth hasn’t felt the same since.
$2,500.. what a racket.

I ended up with a couple of abscesses, but as a result of the manner my teeth were straightened as a teenager. So all of of my teeth problems today are a consequence of care I received decades ago.

BTW don’t mess around with abscesses. They’ll put you in agony.
