PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Makeshift shelters abut busy roadways, tent cities line sidewalks, tarps cover broken-down cars, and sleeping bags are tucked in storefront doorways. The reality of the homelessness crisis in Oregon's largest city can't be denied.
"I would be an idiot to sit here and tell you that things are better today than they were five years ago with regard to homelessness," Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler said recently. "People in this city aren't stupid. They can open their eyes."

As long as someone else cleans up their mess, they'll go someplace else and do it all over again.
And does anyone think this would be happening in these liberal cities, if it weren't a mid-term election year when Dems are in trouble?
Yes Mr Mayor, you are indeed an idiot!!!!
These must polling well
There must be an election coming up.
Looks like the blue meanies have moved on from defund the police to defund the homeless. I guess you take what you can get.
Clear out all the homeless. Gotta make room for new crop of homeless that were previously employed folks that had homes before losing them in biden’s depression.
Something has made these people start acting to stop this stuff. I always go to the poll numbers. They must be really awful.
They are homeless.
I assume they have no job.
They are alive.
Conclusion: Someone is feeding them.
Who?
Polling must be really bad for the AP to report this.
And the people in his city are stupid also, since they voted for him. They deserve each other.
Wonder what ever became of Dignity Village....
“People in this city aren’t stupid. They can open their eyes.”
Prove it!
Not just liberal cities. I saw a large bum encampment driving through Colorado Springs the other day. The problem got a lot worse after Marijuana was legalized. It makes people lazy and leads to chronic Scizoprenia and other mental illnesses in those predisposed.
It’s been long enough since Trump hasn’t been POTUS. Time to clean up the place!
They don’t just go away. They go to another part of the city
On and off ramps, under bridges etc. Multi facet problem.
“I would be an idiot to sit here and tell you that things are better today than they were five years ago with regard to homelessness,” Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler said recently..”
Gee, Ted. Who’s been in charge for the last 5 years?
Just asking.

It is an election year, after all, and a biggie for Oregon.
You wouldn’t know it from the photo at the linked article (the subtext is “FILE - In this aerial photo taken with a drone, tents housing people experiencing homelessness are set up on a vacant parking lot in Portland, Ore., on Dec. 8, 2020.”), but the Hawthorne Bridge viaduct is to the left of that homeless camp, elevated at a height of about 25 feet. There is a pedestrian sidewalk which would normally overlook the lots below. The city has erected a wooden wall attached to the concrete viaduct guardrailing and painted the now 8 foot tall ‘sightline barrier’ a color matching the concrete.
Been that way for months, just to hide the view from commuters and pedestrians (but you need only move 30 feet in either direction to get a view, so clearly it’s not a privacy barrier or, for that matter, a barrier to debris/objects as they erect on overpasses).
Yeah, they’ve been working ‘real hard’ to remove the problem from the public eye, but even Portland has druggie/mental transients who persist adjacent to roadways and whatever public space they see fit to pitch their tarps.
For those who don’t live in and haven’t visited these cities, no: The videos and pictures are NOT accurate.
The reality is much, MUCH worse on the ground and it is impossible to grasp until you’ve experienced it up close (sight AND smell).
From the article:
“People in this city aren’t stupid.”
Actually they are very stupid if they stuck around this long—anybody with half a brain would have fled Portland by now.
