Ok fellow Freepers. Drag out the junk box and dust of the Key and Dipole. I believe this is about to get nasty and communications in a cyberattack will be target one.

Do people still host shows that are only on shortwave radio?

I’ve got everything I need to set up an HF operation. Been too lazy to do it.

I have no clue what MPAS2.0 or Yaesu817 are, but can you run a transmitter amp on a 100watt solar panel? Seems like anything that will carry would suck a lot of juice. I’m guessing one of those acronyms has to do with repeaters.

I haven’t keyed a mic in decades and even back then it was local cb squak

I was sort of forced into it, I live in a neighborhood with a HOA, I didn’t want to fight them, so whenever I want to operate, I setup in driveway and get on the air.

Depending on the conditions I can get Europe on occasion, but routinely get up and down the eastern seaboard and into the Caribbean, I live in NE Florida, so I’m good with that, especially without a more elaborate antenna.

I’ve got two sets of two way radios. They come in handy when you’re caravaning through canyons. And we got a lot up here.

So thats a low power setup? Is that constrained by the license type? Have no idea what the ham space looks these days.

I cranked out my old Shortwave the other day, all I could pick up was Radio Havana Cuba.

I never got licensed, but my husband did, and a little hand-held like that isn’t expensive.

I’m glad to have it when he goes away, because if things go down, I can at least listen to what’s happening around the region even if I can’t legally transmit.

I think I saw that the BBC bailed out of Russia—and then restored their old shortwave broadcasts to Russia.

This just feels like a thread that needs FreeRepublic’s favorite saying for doom and gloom:

“AND SO IT BEGINS!”

“Unless it’s an old vacuum tube radio, the EMP may disable it.”

No. EMP is overblown big time. Every nerd on the Internet wants to proclaim EMP is the worst thing for humanity. The histrionics of EMP has gotten completely out of control.

I got my ticket after they dropped the CW. Damn, I don’t want to learn that.

Chameleon MPAS 2.0 is a portable antenna system designed to allow portable operation and breakdown to fit in a backpack.

Basically you don’t run directly from the Solar Panel, the solar panel connects to a small charge controller, which is constantly charging the battery and you connect the radio to the battery.

The battery I have is the size of a brick and provides 12 amp hours of power, it weighs about 7-8 pounds. It’s a LifePo4 battery, basically lithium iron phosphate.

Yaesu 817 is a 100 watt portable HF radio, that operates on the Ham Bands like 20 meters. You need a General Class Ham license to operate on these bands, which I have. The radio only pulls 1 amp for listening and when I adjust the power down to transmit I can operate hours and hours in daylight and at night for basically listening and occasional transmit, it works well.

Good for about 5 miles without a repeater.

If things go down, who’s going to stop you from transmitting?

Unless you keep your portables in a large faraday cage. Then you can listen to static as your batteries die.

“ure, if you are interested in local communications thru what is called repeaters, you can listen to anything going on in the area, I suspect local ham operators will be talking up a story in a SHTF situation, if you don’t have ham radio repeaters in your area or if they are shut down, then you will be limited to other ham operators with a range of a couple of miles at most.”

Once again, a l little information is dangerous.

What you said is completely wrong. VHF/UHF is only a few miles, but HF is world wide. There are no repeaters involved.
