Dorothea Puente, a serial killer, is becoming known to a whole new generation — decades after being arrested and convicted in a notorious crime.
Puente ran a boarding house in Sacramento in the 1980s. Police found seven bodies in her backyard in November 1988. With the outward portrayal of a sweet granny, she drugged and buried her tenants — and then collected their Social Security benefits.
After the bodies were found, authorities searched in California and Mexico for a week. She was eventually found in Los Angeles, where she was being held.
When Sacramento sister station KCRA found out, there was not enough time to drive from Sacramento to Los Angeles to capture footage of her, and the last planes had already flown out for the day, according to Mike "Domi" Domalaog, a KCRA photographer who was there. That's when the station decided to charter its own plane.
On the way there, authorities asked if their flight plan could be changed. And when the chartered plane arrived, they were taxied to a spot where Puente was picked up and taken back to Sacramento.
So on the way back, late KCRA reporter Mike Boyd did a short interview with her. He was told he could not ask questions about the case, so Boyd asked a few questions about her charity work, Domalaog said.
The brief interview still had some memorable responses.
"I used to be a very good person," she said at one point.
Puente was later convicted of killing three people and sentenced to life in prison. She died in 2011 at 82 years old. She claimed for the rest of her life that she did not kill anyone.
Domalaog said the plane ride and Puente's lengthy trial was a memorable part of his career.
"It's a chapter of my life that I'll never forget," he said.

Yeah, me too. I was in Sacramento when all this went down. It was huge news for weeks or months and I remember it well.

I discovered the cause. There is a Netflix movie coming out about her. The media is pushing the topic as if it’s interesting in order to puff the movie.

The True Crime shows are showing stories about her to a new generation. That’s probably why. I have seen at least two different shows on her. I watch all of them. Yes, I can commit the perfect crime. :) (The joke is that now that I have said it, it’s not perfect. ROFLMAO!

If it is proven that she killed those people buried in her yard, she should be executed within a couple of weeks.
