Russian Banks to Replace VISA and Mastercard with New “Mir” System in Partnership with China’s Union Pay

The Central Bank of the Russian Federation announced on Sunday that several banks will switch to the Chinese card system following the suspension of Visa, Mastercard, and Paypal in Russia.

It can be recalled that Visa, Mastercard, and Paypal announced on Saturday they will suspend all operations in Russia.

“We are compelled to act following Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, and the unacceptable events that we have witnessed,” said Al Kelly, chairman and chief executive officer of Visa Inc.

On Sunday, several banks in Russia will start to issue new cards with the new Russian payments system “Mir” and China’s UnionPay.

According to far-left Wikipedia, “Mir does not itself issue cards, extend credit or set rates and fees for consumers rather Mir provides financial institutions with Mir-branded payment products that they then use to offer credit, debit, or other programs to their customers.”

Bloomberg reported:

Sberbank PJSC said it’s looking at the possibility of issuing cards using Russian payments system Mir and China’s UnionPay after Visa Inc. and Mastercard Inc. suspended operations following the invasion of Ukraine.

Wouldn’t that drive everyone who wants Russian oil to China?

“Wouldn’t that drive everyone who wants Russian oil to China?”

Seems to be what’s going to happen. The question is whether our elites want just that...

I’d your cc company told you that you could not longer use their card and they had no way to repocess any goods would you pay? I don’t get how this isn’t bullish for Russia and a political lifeline to Putin. I hearby declare all debt to visa/mastercard paid!

I can’t help but think that it would have been better to bring Russia into more commercial interest with Europe, than what we see now.

Trump was right about Nord Stream 2, only because the Swamp had taken restructuring NATO off of the table. At least that is my take. If Germany wanted increased oil trade with Russia, the US probably should have welcomed it, while cutting Germany lose from the NATO nipple.

Peaceful commerce is how you have peace. Mutually beneficial trade deters military interests, I believe, in the long run.

Now, we have bloated NATO, war and a further isolated Russia. It’s a game that only a very narrow few are winning.

Well, the US is certainly assisting towards that goal.

BTW, if I owed Visa or Mastercard money, and they cancelled their system in the US, I wouldn’t pay off any outstanding balance owed.

Trump’s point is 100% valid. You are telling me NATO is there to protect against Russian aggression. You are not meeting your obligation and you still want to implement article 5. All of that being the case why are you buying energy from Russia when we can supply it. Russia the aggressor has the power to shut you down. I’d there as dangerous as you say, it’s a really bad idea.

I think Trump was 100% valid, too, given what I think he had to work with.

Remember, NATO was there to deter SOVIET aggression. It made sense to have West Germany in NATO when there was an East and West Germany, and surprise - NATO was there to protect West Germany from East Germany.

The Soviet Union falls, and NATO remains, with a new mission to deter against Russian aggression. Fine. Germany reunites and WTH, East Germany is now in NATO! NATO countries are now supposedly defended from Russia by an aging stockpile of GDR weapons. Great!

The whole mess should have been reevaluated at the fall of the Soviet Union. It should have been pursued to find ways to get Russia economically tied into Europe. It seems there is drive to do it (oil), even without planned effort.

To me, it all stinks to high heaven. I am thinking that NATO is the SWAMP. They stuck Trump with the Steele Dossier and probably told him, in no uncertain terms, that if he even tried to fix NATO they’d have him behind bars.

That’s my take at this point, anyway.

Yep. Russia will have alternatives to the Western financial system. Also, its not like people are going to stop buying Russian, wheat, oil, nickel, gas, timber, etc etc

Sure, MIR exists for 7 years already and they make the most cards issued in Russia for a long time.
