Map also looks like NATO/Europe trying to build the Roman Empire.

How many Russians do you think died in this carnage?

The first Youtube video shows a Russian artillery position that was destroyed. Looks like counter-battery fire with a follow-up ground sweep. I count 9 Vehicles destroyed.

Pulling a number out of my nether regions, I would guess that was about 60 casualties out of about 150 people (a company). The rest did manage to get away in good order.

The Rosgvardia video looks like a convoy ambush with about 28-30 vehicles destroyed in a ground-based ambush. The vehicles are mostly troop carriers, and this was probably a battalion of about 500 men. My nether regions deliver an estimate of 200 casualties. The survivors did not get away in good order. There appears to be corpses left in the snow.

A real military observer on scene would of course deliver estimates much closer to what actually happened.

What a horrible waste of young men, is my basic assessment. I do not see any kind of victory here.

That must be why Russia has been deploying those mobile crematoriums to hide the evidence - if you believe that?

Dead Russians usually means Freedom for her neighbors.

The Marine Corps adopted them and have substantial stocks of them. They could be directed to transfer thousands of them quickly. It would make taking a large city a rather costly affair. NLAWs in more open areas, Carl Gustafs for close in work.

I wonder if the Russians are prepared for the sewer system being used as a transportation system? Clear out a block and the opponents suddenly appear in your rear areas with Carl Gustafs. A la Stalingrad or Warsaw.

During WW2 Stalin and company didn’t take too well to those who surrendered. Many fled west when the war was ending. Those who returned home were imprisoned if they were lucky. Wonder what’s going to happen to the one who get home after this is over.

Senior U.S. defense official:

“In the airspace, we continue to observe that the airspace over Ukraine is contested. Ukrainian air and missile defenses remain effective and in use. The Ukrainian military continues to fly aircraft and to employ air defense assets.”

I’ve already decided the death numbers won’t be right on Ukraines side because are they counting citizens to include Ukrainians fighting or just the soldiers....or are they listing those as citizens. And what about all the foreign fighters there?

Well they had a video (staged or not) of three Russians in an interview. The two on each side of the speaker had black eyes and pretty bangd up....so you wonder if they were forced to say what they did by the Ukrainians. Ukrainians did this before in other wars and conflicts.

A new U.S. intelligence assessment says more than 4,500 Russian soldiers have been killed here in Ukraine since the war began.

Reminds me of the daily body counts, back during the Democrat's Vietnam War. (Told us we would win, sure as shootin'! ;>) And today, a lot of the same folks (Democrat/corporate/media establishment) seem to be hankerin' for the smell of napalm in the mornin' - once again over a country that most Americans couldn't find on a map of the world, if their lives depended on it...

In the Ukrain count....Are they including the Ukrainian fighters along with the military soldiers death count or are they counting them as citizens death count? And what about the foreign soldiers?

Yep, if you break and ran, Stalin ordered that you be executed. The choice was to die by firing squad, or die from German machine guns. But the third choice was to surrender and hope for better treatment by the Germans.

Regarding casualties and deserters. Remember that deserters would possibly be counted by the Russians as “missing in action (MIA),” then one adds in the wounded in action (WIA) and killed in action (KIA).

4,500+ Russian KIA, may be an over estimate, but as a total number of casualties, it definitely makes sense to me. I’m reluctant to accept 4,500+ on the many historical studies I’ve read over the decades that it is very hard to estimate the “other guy’s” casualties. My prime example is the number of planes claimed as shot down in various theaters during WW2; post war studies of records of number of losses by the opposing air forces revealed that more planes were claimed by the respectful sides than were actually shot down. One thing I will state, is that if the Russian casualties, esp KIA, are correct, Putin is facing significant unrest by the Russian population

“Yep, if you break and ran, Stalin ordered that you be executed.”

One of the problems is that is the last major war Russian’s fought. and their army is still built around undertrained and undermotivated conscripts.

Without the commissar standing being them with a pistol they don’t have much interest in risking their life.

Good points. Realistically I think we can say Russian casualties are “a few thousand.”

I don’t think anyone has a number that is much more precise than that.

All the same neocon crowd which were gung-ho about invading a sovereign country which had not committed any aggressive acts towards USA, are now having a cow when Russia invades a neighbor clamoring to join NATO and stockpile weapons.

Yes I refer to Cuban Missile crisis when US navy blockaded sovereign country of Cuba denying them access to their ports.

The difference is Cuba was 90 miles from US shores. Ukraine is right on border of Russia.
