The “Take Charge Of Your Health” Ping List

This potentially high volume ping list is for health articles and studies which describe something you or your doctor, when informed, may be able to implement for your benefit.

Now keeping a new list for conditions expected to concern at least 1% of the population. Ask to be on either the “Common Issues” or “Everything” list.

Please email or private message me if you want on or off of a list and of which list you desire.

Oh good grief.

So will medical AIs now be suggesting all sorts of stuff on the basis of mere numbers, instead of on individual biology?

So. Some genius figured out that taller adults have taller rectums and therefore an increased risk of cancer.

It took 20 years of schooling to figure that out.

So if you walk around with your ass in the air, you can get cancer?

Are taller people at higher risk simply because they have longer colons? Maybe the risk is constant per square inch of colon, but tall people simply have more square inches of it.

Still rather be tall (6’4”) than short.

the average height in the U.S. for men is 5 feet, 9 inches. . . . This means men who are 6 feet, 1 inch . . . or taller are at a 14% increased risk of colorectal cancer and a 6% increased risk of adenomas.

Oh, gee, lucky me. At 6'3", I must be a ticking time bomb. But I am due for a colonoscopy this year, so that's good.

Articles like this always exclude data on life time risk for colorectal cancer.

USA - Males - 4.3% or 1 person in 23

USA - Females - 4.0% or 1 person in 25

Also of note...

Studies vary, but the risk of a medical complication from one colonoscopy is usually stated at 1%-2%.

Bottom line - if you do not have major risk factors - like smoking, heavy alcohol use, significant fatty or processed meat consumption, lack of exercise (like walking and standing), or a family history - your risk for colorectal cancer is about 2%, regardless of gender.

My diagnostic choice - I will wait for a blood test or some kind of non-invasive, non-radioactive, soft tissue image scan.

Wow; I feel better, as I keep shrinking in height every few years. I’ve gone from being 6’0” to a smidge shy of 5’10”, while making up for it by increasing in width.

So maybe there’s hope for me.

“According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the average height in the U.S. for men is 5 feet, 9 inches, and for women it is 5 feet, 4 inches. This means men who are 6 feet, 1 inch and women who are 5 feet, 8 inches (4 inches/10 centimeters above the average U.S. height) or taller are at a 14% increased risk of colorectal cancer and a 6% increased risk of adenomas.”

FWIW, everyone I know who’s had polyps and/or colorectal cancer has been shorter than the above standard for tall.

Not a case in any of the tall folks. And I know a few. :-)
