California mom Sherri Papini arrested for FAKING 2016 kidnapping by 'two Hispanic women' when she was actually with an ex-boyfriend: Lover identified after his relative did an at-home DNA test and it matched samples taken from her clothes six years ago

California mom Sherri Papini who claimed she was kidnapped for 22 days by two Hispanic women in 2016 in a story that shocked and puzzled America, has now been arrested for making it all up six years later.

On Thursday prosecutors charged 'supermom' Papini, 39, for lying to federal agents about being kidnapped and defrauding the state's victim compensation board of $30,000.

The mother-of-two was found on Thanksgiving Day in 2016 after weeks of searching in California and several nearby states 22 days after she disappeared while jogging on November 2.

She was found tied up, with a broken nose, a 'brand' on her right shoulder and a shaved head. Papini told authorities at the time that she had been kidnapped at gunpoint by two Hispanic women, even providing descriptions to an FBI sketch artist.

No one was ever arrested, and authorities could never determine what the 'Hispanic women's' motive was.

When Papini was found on Thanksgiving Day, 2016, police collected DNA samples from her clothes. They ran them against the national criminal database but found no matches.

In 2020, however, they were alerted to a potential match after someone in the ex-boyfriend's family did an at-home family DNA test.

They then traced that sample to the ex-boyfriend, and he admitted the entire hoax.

Sounded very phony at the time; another fraudulent "victim", but I'm betting Hollywood doesn't come to her aid, like they did for Juicy...uh, Jussie Smollett.

She’s definitely in the top right corner of the Hot Crazy Matrix. The danger zone, not the date zone.

Anyone remember the arguments here at FR over the advisability of supplying a data base with DNA samples and what/how government could do with such information?

She sounds like more of a man than Jesse Smollett - at least she garnished her fraud with a broken nose.

Interesting that they figured this out more than five years later. I was in Redding on that Thanksgiving and it was hot news. It never did make any sense. Crazy broad.

We now know that the government has searchable access to those databases, and will use them to find anyone biologically related to you who ever becomes a "person of interest".

They found out because a relative of the boyfriend submitted DNA to a testing site. So it looks like the government has a database of "DNA of interest", which it continually matches against new DNA.

“Crazy people should pay for their craziness.”

She also was reimbursed more than $30,000 by the California Victim´s Compensation Board for visits to her therapist and for the ambulance ride
