The Internal Revenue Service plans to hire 10,000 employees in a push to cut into its backlog of tens of millions of tax returns by recruiting for jobs across the agency that have gone unfilled for years, according to four people familiar with the plan.
The agency will accelerate recruiting in the coming weeks for 80 distinct positions, from entry-level clerical workers to advanced engineers and tax attorneys, one person familiar with the plan said. Among the recruiting targets are high-skill technology professionals to modernize its outdated infrastructure, according to those familiar with the plan, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the details have not been publicly released.
The agency plans to use money from its existing budget, a large share of it from coronavirus stimulus funding, to pay for the new hires, to be made over the next two years. The number of new jobs would represent a 14 percent increase in the IRS workforce. It remains unclear how much the agency will spend on the hiring plan, officials said, but it will be significantly smaller than President Biden’s proposed IRS investment of $80 billion over the next decade.
The IRS entered the tax season this year with 24 million unprocessed paper returns and correspondence, almost all dating back to the 2020 filing season. Taxpayer advocates and members of Congress have been calling on the agency to tackle the backlog, citing potentially dire financial consequences for Americans who rely on their tax credits and refunds for basic living expenses.

There’s such an easy way to fix this.
Abolish Federal income tax withholding,
but 10,000 people will still be looking
for a job.
They can have my return on paper and I’ll never buy an electric car.
My guess would be mostly affirmative action hires. Things will go from worse to worser.
Who is going to take this job. We all know the entire department is going to implode on itself this year. Litishia cannot deal with staples, and Monique cannot deal with the smell of paper. Denis is out for the second time having a sex change and Louis is giving yet another deposition to the IG. JoJoe is eating ice cream and watching cartoons.
Outsource this to Turbotax and Intuit, get rid of all the paper and additional questionnaires. IF something is going to be audited, audit at the time of entry, not 3 years later. When IRS does not know what to do to get back current they are going to just run a flat tax of 19% on all income and say we will work it out over the next 5 years. Sure they will start that discussion in march of 2023.
Obviously US Government workers being a year behind is because of White Supremacy, Russia, Trump and the GOP.
Took those stooges 4 months, yes 4 months, To affirm that I am allowed to Make an S Corp election on my LLC. It’s a single page sent in that’s 1/4 blank.
The IRS is morphimg from being a small hand held dirt devil, into a 20 gallon Shop Vac. It will suck the life out of America’s economy. lust like happens in Cnada, where over 60 per cent of people income goes for local , sate and federal taxes. The Nanny welfare state will continue to grow until they use up every body eleses money and then the elites will look after themnselves while the majority of Americans become penniless serfs who rely on federally fuinded sooup kitchens.
Really. The URS has become the enemy of the people. Starting from when the Lois Lerner fiasco usurped the tea party movement.
These Marxists now in control mean to end America as we know it, and the IRS is a major tool in their gaining their Marxist control.
Not Intuit. They hire based on “equity” now and getting support for them is as difficult as contacting the IRS.
You actually bother trying? LOL...
And what the hell regarding the Loan Manager? Loved it! But it was pulled in the 2022 version.
got my fed refund in about 10 days.(I say “about” because it went into my better angel’s account)
Filed 02/09/2022, feds accepted it 02/09/2022.
I bet the IRS is doing political & social media background checks on all the prospective hires. We’re deep in Orwell-territory here.
I hate (not so)Quickbooks but it’s pretty much the only thing out there for a micro business. I also have a regular 40+ 8-5 so it is convenient if nothing else.
They keep adding “features” all the time (really bugs) on the online version. They totally blew out my sales tax categories for local counties about a year ago. Had to recreate them and hope that the sales tax liability query pulled the old and the new ones in.
“Who is going to take this job…”
The guys like my fifty something brother who was an executive VP at Citi Corp who was dumped after 30 years for younger cheaper talent. The IRS is the ONLY place that would hire him or even think about it. There’s a huge talent pool of summarily dumped executives out there no one else wanted.
Spring cleanup for the elite class?
Go to a flat tax and abolish the IRS.
As of it’s not bad enough that they’re hitting us by forcing our businesses closed, shutting us down, inciting crazy inflation, closing schools, etc…
Now they’re coming after US via the IRS. They don’t need to hire 10,000 “agents” except to reinforce the blitzkrieg that they’re about to unleash on US.
I hear ya. I’m still using the desktop version. And you’re right, there’s not much else out there.
There are 4 major areas of functionality that I appreciate: Bank Feeds, Bank Reconciliation, Payroll Liability processing, and integration with Turbo Tax.
cripes. didn’t want to hear that.
I just restored a backup of DT 2012 into DT2019 for a company of about 60.
Did a restore of DT 2019 Pro to QB online .
Submitted it approx: 13:45 yesterday.
I could finally sign into the online @ 4:50 this a.m.
The only saving grace is the company doesn’t do payroll in QB nor timesheets.
I have the enviable job of reconciling record counts and data mapping -online vs desktop...among other things.
Good Luck to you
